Expedition Inspiration Invites Community to Paint the Town Pink for Breast Cancer Research
Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research invites the Sun Valley community to ?Paint the Town Pink? from July 23-August 4 in the name of breast cancer research.
?The eleven day effort includes five different events that we hope will appeal to a range of ages, incomes and interests,? said Expedition Inspiration Executive Director Katie Powell. ?We want this community to understand that one in eight women continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer, and there are many ways you can join Expedition Inspiration in finding breast cancer cures in our lifetime.?
Paint the Town Pink Week kicks off with the construction of the art installment ?1 in 8? designed by local artist Danica Mattias on the Sun Valley Road field. Expedition Inspiration will collect community submitted names of breast cancer survivors, those lost to the disease and other loved ones on their website to be featured on special tribute flags that will be interwoven with the installment. The tribute will remain on display until August 5.
Mattias? future mother-in-law recently went through breast cancer treatment. "When I was approached about this idea, I immediately thought about her and didn?t hesitate to get involved. My goal for this project is to spread awareness about breast cancer in a meaningful and creative way: I hope this project encourages local organizations to use art as a way of connecting with the community."
Mattias, Expedition Inspiration, and local youth volunteers will create a series of eight large-scale (4-5? diameter) woven balls. One of the eight balls will be distinct to visually represent the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.?
Made from reed, each ball will be interwoven with the tribute flags. They will also feature glow-in-the-dark aspects and pink solar lanterns so the exhibit is visible at all hours.
To submit a name, go to www.expeditioninspiration.org/Events_Paint_the_Town_Pink.php. The submissions can be anonymous and free with an optional donation towards breast cancer research.
The week continues with a Back Alley Party at the Wicked Spud featuring Folk Band Slow Children Playing on Wednesday, July 25, at 5 p.m. Drink and raffle proceeds will go towards Expedition Inspiration?s breast cancer research efforts. Attendees can count on great outdoor deck seating, beer, wine, burgers and fish tacos.
Expedition Inspiration will team up with Ochi Gallery on Thursday, August 2, from 8-10 p.m. to host a speakeasy themed evening of over-the-top fashion performance from artist Bella Boombox and neon light installation from LA based artist Laddie John Dill. Relatives of breast cancer survivors will model, and breast cancer information will be tied into the evening in fun, unpredictable ways.
?There is so much information out there today about breast cancer, which is great, but in my experience a bit daunting,? said Ochi Gallery Director Pauli Ochi. ??I hope this event will present information in a fun and unpredictable way. ?This is a cause close to my family?s heart, so I?m so happy and honored that EI thought of partnering with us.?
The evening will also feature music, cocktails, a raffle and t-shirt sales. The event is free, with a $10 suggested donation at the door, and for those 18 and older.
?This event allows us to send a message of being aware and proud of your own body; of women?s bodies. In short, it comes down to girl power,? said Marketing and Development Director Krista Detwiler.? ?I think this is especially important for women of my generation who may not have felt the devastation of breast cancer within their peer group yet. EI is fighting to make sure they never have to feel that.?
Next up, Director Scott Farquharson will travel to Ketchum for the local premiere of his documentary ?Expedition Inspiration? at Ketchum Town Square on Friday, August 3, at 8 p.m. ?Spectators can enjoy free admission, walking the pink carpet, popcorn, drinks from The Cellar and ice cream from Leroy?s. Expedition Inspiration asks that you bring your own chair or blanket to enjoy the film.
?Our movie documents the stories of five regular people as they climb Mount Borah, the highest peak in all of Idaho,? said Film Director Scott Farquharson. ?Some Expedition Inspiration climbers go up the mountain as a way to reclaim their body from disease while others climb in memory or support of friends and family who suffered from the deadly disease. Together we find out what motivates them to undertake this grueling climb, and what keeps them going as they face their fears, work through the exhaustion, and make their way to the summit.?
Farquharson also interweaves the life story of Laura Evans, the woman who founded Expedition Inspiration. Laura founded Expedition Inspiration after her own bout with breast cancer as a way to raise funds and motivate others to find a cure more than 15 years ago.
The week wraps up with Expedition Inspiration?s main event, the Women?s Health Associates Take-A-Hike and Climb for a Cure on Saturday, August 4. The day begins at 7 a.m. for those who?d like to take on the challenge of climbing Otto?s Peak (10, 458 ft.) led by Sawtooth Mountain Guides, and at 2 p.m. at Boundary Campground for hikers.
Entrance for climbers is $250 and entrance for hikers is $25, which includes dinner and a blank tribute flag that can be filled in with a lost loved one?s name. Hikers can choose from three different trails of varying difficulty. Dinner from Calle 75 Tacos and music will follow at Boundary Campground until 6:30 p.m. along with a special surprise from Sun Valley Paragliders? Club.
Participants are encouraged to fundraise prior to the event for their chance to win prizes offered from Sun Valley Paraglider?s Club, Smith Sport Optics and special edition ?Idaho Is a State? t-shirts.
?We hope to raise $25,000 in total from our Take-A-Hike and Climb for a Cure,? said Expedition Inspiration Chair of the Board Nancy Knoble. ?We so appreciate our donors? participation and fundraising efforts.?
To register for the Take-A-Hike or Climb for a Cure, submit a name for the art installation, or for more event information, visit Expedition Inspiration?s website at www.expeditioninspiration.org. You can also follow #PaintTheTownPink and @BreastCancerEI on Twitter for fun, up-to-date information.
Expedition Inspiration seeks to find cures in our lifetime by raising funds to reach new heights in breast cancer research by bringing together leaders in the field at an annual Symposium, sponsor Young Investigator Award grants, encourage challenging physical activities and increase breast cancer awareness.

MIAMI -- Understanding dynamics of mesoscale eddies (motions on the scales of tens to a few hundreds of kilometers) remains one of the fundamental challenges in physical oceanography. While the importance of these eddies in ocean dynamics is now widely accepted, they are still not fully captured by the majority of climate models, and scientists are still struggling to understand how these eddies form and evolve over time.
In particular, it has been discovered that mesoscale variability in the ocean leads to the spontaneous generation of slowly evolving patterns. These formations may become as important for eddy generation, as well-established baroclinic instability. The resulting Large-Scale Eddy-Driven Patterns (LEDPs) represent a substantial portion of the variability in our oceans and can play an important role in the transport of heat, salinity, momentum and carbon. So, it is vital to improve our understanding of these eddy effects, which can impact the accuracy of future climate projections.
Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, a new collaborative study between teams led by University of Miami (UM) Associate Professor Igor Kamenkovich and Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Associate Professor Timour Radko will investigate critical oceanic processes involved in the LEDP dynamics, using a combination of numerical simulations and analytical multi-scale methods. This will make it possible to offer a more complete and realistic description of LEDPs, directly applicable to observations and comprehensive climate models. A combination of approaches will reveal the complex interplay between mesoscale eddies and LEDPs, not available through numerical simulation alone. The project will also help to describe the eddy transport of such important tracers as heat and carbon caused by the LEDPs.
"Advances in the understanding of eddy-induced transport and low frequency variability in the oceans will help to improve climate prediction capabilities, ultimately leading to societal benefits," said Kamenkovich. "In addition to its oceanographic importance, this study will have significant implications for fundamental fluid mechanics, geophysics and climate science."
The project team will include Ph.D. candidate Mikhail Rudko, from the UM Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, postdoctoral associate from the NPS Jason Flanagan, and two graduate Navy students. The idea for this study originated from a sabbatical Radko took in Miami last year, where he was hosted by Kamenkovich in his laboratory at UM.

A tomato by any other gene: Just as sweet? (+video)
New research shows that the bland flavor of a popular variety of firm tomatoes is caused by a genetic switch. Locating this switch may enable scientists to create good-tasting and good-shipping tomatoes in the future. ?
By Associated Press / June 28, 2012
EnlargeUsing genetics, scientists have been able to dig up the dirt on why homegrown?tomatoes taste so much sweeter than the ones in the supermarket.

Researchers found a genetic switch responsible for some of the sugar production within a?tomato. A new study in Friday's edition of Science found that the common type of?tomato?bred for firmness and good shipping also inadvertently turns off the sugar-producing switch. That makes it less sweet and blander than garden varieties.
University of California Davis plant scientist Ann Powell said knowing the genetics behind the sugar-making could lead someday to development of sweeter?tomatoes?that also travel well.

KERALA QUESTIONED STATEMENT OF ANAND SHARMA ON FDI ...

KERALA QUESTIONED STATEMENT OF ANAND SHARMA ON FDI IN RETAIL
CAIT SENT MEMORANDUMS TO CHIEF MINISTERS
In the matter of allowing FDI in Retail, repeated statements have been issued by the
Government recently. One such statement of Union Commerce Minister Shri Anand
Sharma wherein he claimed the support of Kearala Government for allowing FDI has
been contradicted by Kerala Chief Minister Shri Oomen Chandy who has said that State
Government had not written to the Centre supporting the FDI as claimed by Mr. Sharma.
Such a misleading statement of Shri Sharma has questioned the creditability of the
Government.
Why the Union Government is in great haste to allow FDI in Retail by overlooking the
ground realties of Indian Retail Trade is a matter needs a probe-said the Confederation
of All India Traders (CAIT) which is spearheading a national movement against FDI in
Retail Trade. The Government must clarify the pressures which are forcing for making
such statements. The CAIT has strongly said that any move to allow FDI in Retail will
be protested tooth and nail nationwide by the traders and other Stake Holders of Retail
Trade.
The CAIT has written a communication to Chief Ministers of all States and has sent
them its publication ? FDI in Retail ? Assumptions V/s Facts? in order to apprise them
with the ground realties and detrimental affects of FDI in Retail Trade. The CAIT has
also sought an audience with the Chief Ministers.
The CAIT regretted that on such an important issue, the Central Government did not
think it propoer to talk to Traders who are one of the important constituent of Retail
Trade in a situtation where not only the traders but farmers, labourers, hawkers, consu
mers and other sections of the retail trade are bitterly opposing FDI in Retail Trade.
The CAIT has demanded that the unanimous report of the Parliamentary Standing
Committee submitted on 8th June,2009 to Parliament should be made subject matter
of the discussion on this matter.
For more information please contact CAIT, Secretary General, Mr. Praveen Khandelwal@9891015165,

FILE- This Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, file photo, shows News Corp.'s headquarters in New York. Under pressure to limit contagion from the British phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. confirmed Tuesday, June 26, 2012, that it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The Wall Street Journal, News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reported late Monday that the company is considering the separation of the newspaper and book publishing businesses from the entertainment arm, which includes Fox News Channel, broadcast TV network and 20th Century Fox movie studio. The media conglomerate did not specify Tuesday which businesses each company would contain. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)
News Corp. said Thursday that its board has approved plans to split into two companies. One company will operate as a newspaper and book publisher, while the other will be an entertainment company.
Here's how the split will work:
? Newspapers, book publishing and information services such as Dow Jones Newswires will be part of the publishing company. The 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel will be part of the media and entertainment company.
? Shareholders will get a share in each company for every share of News Corp. they now own. That ratio may change by the time the plan is finalized. Both companies will trade publicly, under different stock tickers.
? Rupert Murdoch will be chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company did not name a CEO for the publishing business.
? News Corp.'s board unanimously approved the split, but it will need to approve a more formal proposal. The deal is also subject to shareholder and numerous regulatory approvals.
? News Corp. plans to hold a special meeting of its shareholders in the first half of 2013 and expects the deal to be completed in about a year.

Zoologger: Fish with elephant's nose and crystal eyes
Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals ? and occasionally other organisms ? from around the world
Species: Gnathonemus petersii
Habitat: peering through murky bottom waters throughout west and central Africa
Step from a sunlit hillside into the darkness of a cave, and you immediately have a problem: you can't see. It's best to stand still for a few minutes until your eyes adjust to the dimness, otherwise you might blunder into a hibernating bear that doesn't appreciate your presence.
The same thing will happen when you leave again: the brightness of the sun will dazzle you at first. That's because your eyes have two types of receptor: one set works in bright light and the other in dim light. Barring a few minutes around sunset, only one set of receptors is ever working at any given time.
Peters' elephantnose fish has no such limitations. Its peculiar eyes allow it to use the two types of receptor at the same time. That could help it to spot predators as they approach through the murky water it calls home.
It's electric
Peters' elephantnose fish belongs to a large family called the elephantfish, all of which live in Africa. They get their name from the trunk-like protrusions on the front of their heads. But whereas the trunks of elephants are extensions of their noses, the trunks of elephantfish are extensions of their mouths.
To find a Peters' elephantnose fish, you must lurk in muddy, slow-moving water. Look closely, because the fish is brown and so is the background.
It finds its way through the murk using its trunk, which generates a weak electrical field that helps it sense its surroundings and even discriminate between different objects. The fish's electric sense allows it to hunt insect larvae in pitch darkness.
The fish has paid a price for its electrical sensitivity. Processing the signals takes brainpower, so it has an exceptionally large brain. As a result, 60 per cent of the oxygen taken in by the fish goes to its brain. Even humans, with our whopping brains, only devote 20 per cent of our oxygen to them.
Eyes front
Now for its eyes. Most vertebrates, including humans, have two types of light receptors on their retinas: rods and cones. Rods can sense dim light, but become bleached in bright light and stop working. Cones can't see in dim light, but given enough light they can see fine details and colours.
Most animals' eyes are specialised for one or the other. Animals that are active during the day tend to have more cones than nocturnal animals such as foxes. In the human eye, the cones are clustered in a central region called the fovea, where the light is sharply focused, and the rods are outside it. As a result, we have excellent daytime vision and rather poor night vision.
The retina of the Peters' elephantnose fish looks completely different. It is covered with cup-shaped depressions. Around 30 cones sit inside each cup, and a few hundred rods are buried underneath.
Because of the peculiar design of the fish's retina, it was thought to be blind until about 10 years ago, says Andreas Reichenbach of the Paul Flechsig Institute for Brain Research in Leipzig, Germany. Reichenbach has now worked out what the cups are for.
Crystal cups
Each cup has a layer of massive cells that are full of guanine crystals. These form a mirrored surface that amplifies the light intensity within the cups, ensuring that the cones have enough light to work with.
At the same time, because the cups are eating up so much of the light, only a small amount reaches the cones. As a result, both sets of receptors are supplied with the right amount of light.
Yet when Reichenbach tested the fishes' vision, they didn't seem to do very well. For instance, they could only see objects that covered a big swathe of their visual field. If humans had vision that bad, we would miss any object whose width was less than one sixth of a full moon.
However, the Peters' elephantnose fish were very good at spotting large moving objects against a cluttered background ? essential for fish that live in dirty water. Presented with a monitor displaying a black stimulus on a white background, they took as long to spot it as goldfish. But when a grey noise pattern ? like an untuned TV ? was superimposed, the elephantnose fish spotted the stimulus faster than the goldfish.
The fish's ability to see the wood for the trees probably helps it spot incoming predators like catfish. So Reichenbach thinks its oddball visual system isn't a mistake. "It's the right type for this fish," he says.

Modern Trends in High-End Custom Homes
One of the greatest things about custom building a home is that you get to choose virtually everything from the style to the design to the fixtures.? You truly get to make it your own.? With this, comes many choices and we are starting to see a myriad of changes in the choices that are being made when it comes to building high-end custom homes.?
Typically here in San Antonio, throughout the past decade, many of the elite custom homes have been built with Mediterranean architecture and Tuscan features & finish out?heavy textures, rich colors, arches, crown molding, etc?.? Well, it seems as though this trend is fading some & that Modern & Contemporary are taking its place in high-end custom building.
San Antonio is not jumping feet-first into the ultra-modern style that we see in some areas of California or even Austin, that can sometimes border on stark & clinical, but we are definitely seeing cleaner lines, more glass and without a doubt, more open spaces.? Ceilings are getting taller, windows are getting larger and finish-out is becoming less elaborate?simple, yet refined.?
Even with the larger & more open gathering spaces, the overall size of homes is decreasing.? What is not decreasing is the use of quality products, energy-efficiency & high-tech features. ?Kitchens and master baths are still getting a lot of attention.? Kitchens are decked out with top-notch appliances, granite surfaces and large eat-at-islands.? Master baths are getting even more spa-like with oversized soaking tubs, large showers with multiple shower heads & separate generous walk-in closets.? Many Master Baths even come equipped with their own coffee bars & mini-fridges.? To go along with these larger showers many are choosing water-saving shower heads and tank-less water heaters for added water conservation. ??Home automation is also on the rise with elaborate lighting functions, streaming audio & advanced security features that in many cases can be controlled not only by remote control and at various locations within the residence, but also by the use of smart phone technology?even when not at home.
It?s not just the style & features that are changing, but the designs and layouts that are transitioning as well.? For example, one previously ?must-have? in custom built homes was the media room.? While we still see homes that feature dedicated theater rooms, many new homes are being built with larger multi-purpose common areas?many times complete with a state-of-the-art built in bar.? We are also noticing an increased focus on outdoor living spaces.? Several key outdoor components are outdoor kitchens & swimming pools, both of which are getting their own modern make-overs as well. Most notably swimming pools, which have strayed away from the freeform lagoon look to shapes with straight lines that incorporate features such as breath-taking negative edges and water walls.? Many custom builders are finding unique ways to combine indoor & outdoor living spaces?making for effortless congregation and easier entertaining.?
Over the past several years as many real estate markets have gone through some tough times, San Antonio?s market has stayed relatively stable & has even showed signs of growth.? This, combined with our strong local economy, has brought many transplants to our city from other states and even other countries.? As others see San Antonio as a safe place to invest in real estate, a good place to work & a great place to live, our real estate market & trends are feeling the positive affect and changes.? High-end custom home builders are on the front line when it comes to adapting to new innovations and adopting new design demands.? As technologies continue to ascend and home buying consumer styles continue to evolve, it will be continue to be exciting to watch San Antonio?s luxury homes transform into the future.

Afghanistan wants its cultural heroes back
KABUL (Reuters) - - Interred a quarter century ago in Pakistan, the remains of Afghan poet Ustad Khalilullah Khalili now lie in a forlorn corner of Kabul University, brought here to be reburied so that no one else can lay claim to the revered poet-philosopher.
He has no epitaph; only a few wilted bouquets lie at the grave of Afghanistan's most prominent 20th century poet. Three policemen guard the site.
But if President Hamid Karzai - who ordered the remains be disinterred from a grave in the Pakistani city of Peshawar last month - has his way, the reburial will become an assertion of Afghan culture over encroachment by Pakistan and Iran.
"We brought him back from Pakistan because he was our poet and scholar," said Mohammad Hussain Yamin, head of the Persian and Dari department at Kabul University.
"We don't want someone in future to say that he belonged to Pakistan just because he lived the final years of his life there."
The assertion of cultural sovereignty is part of an effort to unite Afghanistan and prove it can stand on its own after most foreign troops leave at the end of 2014.
The government says it wants an end to "foreign interference", usually a reference to Pakistan, but also Iran with which it is locked in a fierce debate over ownership of some of the greatest poets and philosophers in the region.
Poetry is big in Afghanistan, from the time of the kings of the 10th century to the present day, permeating every level of society from children in school to warlords and even the austere Taliban who study long works of classical Persian poetry as part of their education in religious schools.
It's the thread that runs between Afghanistan's often warring ethnic groups whether Tajik, Hazara, Pashtun, Uzbek, Turkmen, Nuristani, Baluch, or any of the many other sub-groups and clans.
CULTURAL CLAIMS
But along with the death and destruction of the past three decades, Afghans say they also lost a chunk of their rich cultural heritage with Iran, Pakistan and even Turkey claiming parts of it.
Many, like Khalili, left the country to escape the wars and died in faraway lands which slowly began to claim them as their own, Afghanistan says.
Now it aims to get its heritage back.
"Iran wants to show the world it had a glorious past. This has been going on for years, they have been claiming many of our literary figures as their own. We cannot remain silent," said Jalal Noorani, an adviser at the Information and Culture Ministry.
Debate has long raged over Rumi, arguably the greatest Persian poet, but now as Afghanistan begins to stand on its feet, the claims and counter-claims have intensified not only over him but also others.
Rumi, known as Mawlana Jalal-ud-Din Balkhi in Afghanistan and Mevlevi in Iran, was born in the 13th century in Balkh which was at the time an eastern part of the Persian empire of Khorasan but is now a province in northern Afghanistan.
His family moved and they eventually settled in present-day Turkey where he wrote some of the greatest mystic Sufi poetry in Persian.
Today, all three countries regard him as their national poet even though his poetry itself transcends borders, religion and ethnic divides.
Rumi's poetry is displayed on the walls of Tehran, sung in Iranian music and read in Iranian school books. Iranians are known to live with his poetry.
But Yamin says what is indisputable is that his origins were in Afghanistan. Rumi's occupies pride of place on a billboard in Yamin's room that gives details of the birth dates and place of birth of poets that others have laid claim to.
"We have repeatedly given evidence that these figures belong to Afghanistan, not Iran. When we sit down with the Iranians and discuss these issues, they don't offer any evidence. They say in the past both countries were one, so they call all these poets, philosophers Iranian," said Yasmin.
CHALLENGE
Iranian embassy officials could not be reached for comment and did not respond to an email.
In the past, Iranians have challenged Afghanistan to a test of history, suggesting they were waking up a bit late to claim inheritance.
At a concert in Kabul a few years ago, an Iranian singer challenged any member of the audience to speak for two minutes on Rumi since they claimed he was their own. Afghan authorities took offence and the concert had to end hastily.
"Afghans are a bit late at this. Iran and Turkey have stolen their thunder," said Mohammad Taqi, a U.S.-based columnist for Pakistan's Daily Times newspaper who has written extensively on the Pashtun heartland straddling Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Iran, he said, had milked Rumi and the whirling dervishes that his poetry inspired by setting up cultural centers on the pattern of Germany's Goethe Institute.
Still, this new burst of cultural revivalism in Afghanistan can help bridge the distance between the Tajiks and the Hazaras, and to a certain extent the Pashtuns, he said.
"A supra-ethnic Afghan identity needs non-violent icons."

Check Out These Tips If You Are Interested In Buying Real Estate ...
While purchasing real estate may seem involved and complicated, it can be quite rewarding if you understand what is involved. Don?t be afraid, the tips in this article will help you avoid that.
You must understand well the terms used in mortgage loans before purchasing a home. Knowing everything you can about monthly mortgage payments and total cost of the loan will minimize all of your confusion.
Have a pre-qualification letter from a reputable lender before beginning your home search. A giant reason is because you need to know if you will get the financing before you get your hopes up. Furthermore, since obtaining a mortgage can take some time, it makes sense to get the ball rolling early.
It is absolutely necessary that you research a home?s neighborhood before you invest in a home. You need to find a neighborhood that meet your needs so that you will be totally satisfied with your home for the long haul. If you do not have a good feel for the neighborhood, then you may have issues in the future.
When you officially decide to purchase a home, don?t forget all the other options that are available. It might take a while to locate the property that fits exactly what you are looking for.
When looking to select the perfect agent to represent you, make sure you inquire how long he or she has lived in your preferred area. If they have only been around for a short while, they are not going to know as much about the roads, community restrictions and neighborhoods as someone else. An agent living in the city or district for ten years, on the other hand, is more likely to have a deep understanding of the area.

House finds Attorney General Holder in contempt
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Eric Holder was found in contempt of Congress on Thursday as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives sanctioned the nation's top law enforcement official for withholding some documents related to a failed gun-running probe.
The mostly partisan vote of 255-67 marked the first time a sitting attorney general and presidential Cabinet member was cited for contempt by the full House. No Senate vote is necessary in this House contempt citation.
Many Democrats refused to cast votes, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi led dozens of her colleagues in a walkout from the House floor in protest.
The fight over the Obama administration documents revolves around "Operation Fast and Furious," a federal law enforcement program intended to track weapons sold in Arizona that were suspected of being transported to Mexico for use by violent drug cartels.
In the end, 17 Democrats voted to support the contempt charge, while two Republicans opposed it and 108 Democrats refused to cast votes.
Reacting to the vote, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer called it "a transparently political stunt," despite Justice Department efforts to accommodate Congress.
Holder, in a statement released by the Justice Department, noted that he had ordered an independent investigation of Fast and Furious "as soon as it came to light" and said he "tried to cooperate with the congressional investigation" but was "rebuffed."
With the House vote, Holder said "an unnecessary court conflict will ensue." He called the House investigation "politically-motivated."
DOCUMENTS STILL SOUGHT
The House also voted 258-95 on a resolution asking U.S. courts to force Holder to turn over documents being sought by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee as part of its long-running investigation of Fast and Furious. That could lead to a prolonged court fight with an uncertain outcome while a judge weighs the House demand against the Obama administration's claim of executive privilege to protect the documents.
The unprecedented House rebuke of Holder was overshadowed by the U.S. Supreme Court's upholding of Democratic President Barack Obama's controversial healthcare law - a ruling that was reverberating throughout the country.
Nevertheless, the House devoted much of its legislative session on Thursday to a sometimes bitter debate over Holder's role in Fast and Furious.
The Justice Department initially denied that a program was being run that allowed some guns to "walk" into Mexico - a contention it later retracted, raising Republican suspicions.
According to government figures, between 2007 and 2011, of 99,000 firearms recovered in Mexico and submitted to U.S. law enforcement, more than 68,000 came from the United States. In recent years, those weapons have shifted more and more from handguns to high-powered rifles.
By early 2011, Fast and Furious had been terminated after disclosures that federal agents had lost track of many of the high-powered weapons, which subsequently were traced to crimes, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
House Republicans and Democrats have engaged in arguments all year over issues ranging from budget and taxes to contraceptives. Thursday's debate was no exception.
Republican Representative Darrell Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called the Arizona law enforcement operation "reckless."
Issa said the contempt vote was held "because when we asked legitimate questions ... about Fast and Furious, we were lied to. We were lied to repeatedly and over a 10-month period."
Pelosi accused Republicans of using the election-year contempt charge to undermine Holder's efforts to combat voter suppression in some states.
"This is something that makes a witch hunt look like a day at the beach," Pelosi told reporters. "It is a railroading of a (contempt) resolution that is unsubstantiated by the facts."
The tussle between the Obama administration and House Republicans is over the release of a series of documents dating from February 4, 2011, when the Justice Department initially denied that guns were being allowed to "walk" into Mexico.
The fight could jeopardize the jobs of some senior Justice Department officials if Congress ultimately finds they were hiding important information related to Fast and Furious.
Conversely, Republicans could be embarrassed if nothing turns up and they devoted so much time and energy to the affair, despite the need to help the struggling U.S. economy - the top priority of voters in the run-up to the November 6 presidential and congressional elections.
HIGH-POWERED LOBBYING
The National Rifle Association, a powerful lobbying organization that opposes gun regulation, has made the Holder contempt move a top priority. It has warned all 435 House members that a vote against the contempt citation would be a black mark against them.
The NRA has argued that Fast and Furious was actually a back-door move by the Obama administration to lay the ground for new gun regulations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which ran the southwest border gun-running investigation.
Obama administration officials point out that the Justice Department already has released more than 7,000 documents to Issa's committee and that they showed that top officials in Washington initially knew little about Fast and Furious, which was hatched by law enforcement officials in Arizona.
House Democrats, meanwhile, have complained that Issa has rejected their calls to investigate Bush administration gun probes similar to Fast and Furious.
The fight between Republicans and Holder escalated last week, after the White House exerted "executive privilege" over the post-February 4, 2011 documents, saying they were protected communications that any administration needs as part of its deliberative process.
In a partisan vote last week, Issa's committee charged Holder with contempt after negotiations to resolve the dispute failed. House Republican leaders immediately announced that the full House debate and vote would come quickly.
While contempt of Congress charges generally are aimed at forcing officials to produce information to Congress, legal experts pointed out that they are very hard to enforce and this action could bring months or years of litigation and stalemate.

Why Fish Oil Omega 3 For Puppies is the Most Important Addition ...
There?s no doubt about it, fish oil omega 3 for puppies can help with their development and protect them from degenerative diseases in the future. They can help puppies in the same way they do for us by lowering the risk of heart disease, keeping the cholesterol levels healthy which can be a real problem as they get older and keeping their joints healthy too.
Fish oil omega 3 for puppies is among the most commonly used supplement in all of veterinary medicine, to the point that they are not even recognized as an alternative treatment anymore. It is the essential omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA that provide the benefits as they have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation lies behind most health problems in puppies and older dogs which is why these oils are so effective.
They also help to heal dry or irritated hairless patches, helping the hair to regrow and promoting a healthy shining coat. These essential fats cannot be made by dogs or humans for that matter and puppy food today contains very little, making it even more important to add a daily oil to their diets.
The key is to use the best oils possible with all the toxins removed or you can cancel out any benefits. You don?t need a special one for puppies and dogs as the ones for us humans are just fine! If they are not able to swallow them, simply cut them open and pour onto their food each morning. One 1000mg capsule or soft gel is enough as the human dose is two or more!
A high proportion of DHA fats are necessary as these provide the anti-inflammatory benefits and help to keep the brain healthy and your puppy mentally alert. Look to get 250mg of DHA in each 1000mg capsule for the most benefits.
The most effective and purest fish oil omega 3 for puppies will be molecularly distilled to remove all traces of mercury, lead, arsenic and PCB?s from the fish and that are still present in many oils today, just check the label. As you can see, most puppies are lacking in these essential fats and so giving them the right daily dose of oil can really help them to live a longer and much healthier life. If you would like to learn more about the pure DHA omega 3 supplements I recommend and use for my own dogs, visit my website today.

When the aliens call, who'll answer?
Gail Shumway / Getty Images
In a recently conducted poll, 19 percent of the respondents said they thought Washington, D.C., would be the most likely landing zone for a UFO. But if that ever happened, who's the best person to lead the welcoming party? About 65 percent said they'd rather have Barack Obama than Mitt Romney handle the situation.
By Alan Boyle
A new poll suggests that 77 percent of Americans think there's evidence that aliens have already visited Earth. The same poll suggests most Americans think President Barack Obama would do a better job than presumptive GOP challenger Mitt Romney if we had to fight off an alien invasion. And if we have to rely on a superhero to save us, they'd rather go with the Hulk than Batman.
That somewhat silly survey was conducted to tout a "Chasing UFOs" TV series on the National Geographic Channel, but the results raise a serious question: If an alien civilization does get in touch with us, who's in charge of figuring out what to do?
"Nobody's in charge," says Seth Shostak, who is senior astronomer at the California-based SETI Institute as well as the chairman of the International Academy of Astronautics' SETI Permanent Study Group.?Shostak and I will be talking about SETI?? the search for extraterrestrial intelligence?? as well as its serious and silly implications on "Virtually Speaking Science." The talk-show program gets under way at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT/SLT) on BlogTalkRadio and in the Second Life virtual world. As the poll done for National Geographic suggests, a good number of people suspect the aliens have already arrived, presumably on UFOs or through interdimensional travel. Most scientists scoff at that idea. "Why would they appear only to cranks and weirdos?" British physicist Stephen Hawking asked earlier this month. But Shostak thinks it's only a matter of time before extraterrestrial civilizations actually do make themselves known, by sending signals across the light-years. Almost a decade ago, he predicted that we'd detect those signals by the year 2025, and today he told me he's sticking by that prediction.
During our pre-show interview, Shostak laid out his rationale for the 2025 date and discussed how an alien-contact scenario is likely to go down. Check out this edited transcript of the Q&A, and join us for "Virtually Speaking Science" tonight.
Cosmic Log: Do you still feel that 2025 is a good time frame for alien contact? And maybe more importantly, how do we know we're getting closer to the date?
Shostak: People ask, 'Are you getting close?' And we no more know whether we're getting close than Chris Columbus knew he was getting close to the Americas?? we might some palm fronds a day or two out, but other than that, we don't know. In some sense, it' come as a complete surprise if we get a signal. We know that from false alarms. They never occur when you expect them, because you never expect them.
But in terms of the prediction, that's based on the following: We're looking for needles in a haystack. If you ask, when are you going to find a needle, you need to know three things: How big is the haystack? How fast are you going through the hay? And how many needles are in there? We know two out of three. The haystack's the galaxy, and we know how fast we're going through it. We don't know the number of needles. So I took estimates of the number from the Drake Equation, and figured that it's two dozen years out. What's happened in the meantime is that the funding crisis has slowed things down a bit.
Q: Do you think you need to revise the 2025 date?
A: I think 2025, 2030 is about right, given that we can continue to do the experiment.
Q: Is it a steady process, or is there an increasing rate of hay examination?
A: This is all predicated on an increasing rate. That's the march of technology, which is mostly digital electronics. Computers keep getting faster and faster at any given price point, and that's good news for us. We can look at a larger chunk of the radio dial at once. We can go through the stars faster. Or we can look at bigger hunks of sky at once. It's mostly computing power that is responsible for the increasing speed of SETI. We're not sitting around with earphones the way Jodie Foster was.
Q: Could it be that the patterns of communication by extraterrestrial civilizations take a form completely different from what we assume?
A:?We kind of know what areas SETI is weak in. It's been slow, in the sense that you've got a couple of hundred billion star systems in the galaxy, and if you can look at only a couple a day, that's really slow going. That might take forever. Can we look at more stars in a given time, with adequate sensitivity?
The second thing is, it may be that you really have to look for a long time at any given star system. Of course, we don't do that. We look at any given star system, at any given frequency, for at most a few minutes. Some other search programs look for one and a half seconds at any given star system.?If the aliens are broadcasting in our direction once a week, or once a day, or once an hour, we're not going to see it. We know that's a problem.
Another issue is that the aliens may not know we're here because they haven't picked up 'I Love Lucy' yet. They don't know Homo sapiens is here, they just know that Earth is a planet with biology. They may not be motivated to target us relentlessly with reality television. They may broadcast now and then, with a little ping just to see if anybody's here. You really need an experiment that can pick up an intermittent, maybe one-off signal that's designed to ping the planet. Everybody knows that. That's a technology issue, but it's an issue that's getting better.
Q: Has anybody come up with a concept for an all-sky, all-the-time receiver?
A: Yeah, well, all-sky, all the time, all frequencies?? that's what you'd looove to have. On paper, you can design an instrument that can look at the entire sky. All frequencies, that's another problem, but you can certainly cover more frequencies than we do. It's all a question of whether you can afford to build such an instrument. The answer is, no, not now. It takes an enormous amount of computing power to do that. However, one thing you can say about the future is that there will be more computing power. This is not impossible. This is not like building rockets to go at 99 percent of the speed of light. That might work on paper, too, but in practice, that's a long way off. But this is something where you can say, with the computing power of a few decades hence, it becomes a practical thing.
Q: Assuming that alien signals are detected by 2025, is humanity ready for that?
A: Well, I don't know how much planning has been done. We've revised some protocols, but those are just the immediate steps you take if you pick up a signal. They deal with practical matters, like checking the signals out and alerting everybody. But I don't know that there's any large-scale effort to prepare humanity, any more than there was any preparation by the Indians in the Caribbean in case a Spanish ship showed up. I don't think that's a problem, to be honest. In poll after poll, the public has said they believe the aliens are out there. They see them on television every night, and at the movies every third weekend. A third of 'em think the aliens are already here, but they don't see a problem with that, either. Nobody's staying home. Everybody's still going to work.
I think that psychologically, everybody could handle it. It's just be a big news item. Whatever it would be, people would find it interesting. But they'd be savvy enough to realize there's no immediate threat. The aliens would be 500 light-years away, and we pick up their signal. ?There's no reason to think that people would go just completely non-linear.
The long-term consequences are less predictable. People would ask, should we broadcast back? Should we send a rocket in that direction? What should we do?
Q: Who would be in charge if there was an alien signal? Assuming that scientists confirm that there's an anomalous signal pattern, hinting at extraterrestrial intelligence, what's the procedure?
A: I don't think that there's anybody designated to be in charge. There was a flap a few years ago, involving an official at the U.N., but that was all a red herring. She quickly admitted that she's not in charge. Nobody's in charge.
Look, the real people who will be in charge will be the media, because they'll be reporting it. In some sense, whoever finds the signal is probably in charge. If it's us, then somebody at the SETI Institute will be called. Or suppose it's the Berkeley group. Well, they're in charge. Or maybe it's a group that comes across the signal by accident. There's no hierarchy. Anyway, you know how the media work?? they're not going to follow the rules.
There's no danger in any of this, except for one thing: That's the idea that you're sitting around, and suddenly there's a signal, and you call a press conference. That's not the way it will happen. We get signals all the time, and someday one of those signals will pass all the tests, and it slowly emerges as a real signal. But it takes something on the order of five days before you're convinced. During all that time, the media knows about this, because there is no secrecy. But there's no press conference yet, because the scientists aren't yet sure themselves. This time lag means there will be all sorts of stories before the official word is out. It isn't because of leakage, it's because anytime anybody finds something interesting, they may mention it. They'll put it on their blog. Who knows what they'll do?
It'll be very, very messy. And the corollary to this is that you can probably expect a lot of false alarms. There'll be something interesting, and a lot of people will write about it, and three days later it turns out to be nothing.
Q: Some people worry that our own radio signals are advertising our presence in what could be a rough neighborhood, but I take it that's not a concern of yours.
A:?There are people who get their knickers in a knot about this deliberate broadcast stuff. National Geographic is supposed to be collecting tweets to broadcast as an answer to the "Wow Signal." I personally don't get heartburn about broadcasting. The fact is that NBC is broadcasting all the time, right? You can say, well, that's a weak signal. Sure it is. But if you're really worried about broadcasting into space, don't just shut down the publicity stunts. You better shut down the radars at the Seattle-Tacoma airport, too. They're broadcasting into space all the time.

More nuggets from the National Geographic UFO poll:?
- The "Aliens Among Us" survey polled a random nationwide sample of 1,114 Americans between May 21 and May 29. The poll was conducted by Kelton Research, which used email invitations and online surveys. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population ages 18 and older. Margin of error is +/- 2.9 percent.
- More than one-third of those surveyed (36 percent) believe UFOs exist. Eleven percent are confident they've spotted a UFO, and 20 percent know someone who claims to have seen one.
- Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) said Obama would be better-suited than Romney to handle an alien invasion. Seventy-nine percent believe the government has kept information about UFOs a secret from the public. Nineteen percent think Washington, D.C., is the most likely landing zone for a UFO, while 28 percent think a UFO would touch down in Roswell, N.M.
- Seventy-seven percent think there are signs that suggest aliens have visited Earth. Most of these people said that the evidence came in the form of photographs (60 percent) and videos (57 percent) of UFOs.
- If aliens landed, 22 percent said they would try to befriend the visitors. Fifteen percent said they would run away, 13 percent said they would lock their doors, and 2 percent said they would try to inflict bodily harm.
- Seventy-one percent think that aliens are more likely to exist than are superheroes, vampires and zombies. But if aliens attacked Earth, 21 percent said they would most likely call on the Hulk to deal with the havoc, compared with Batman (12 percent) or Spider-Man (8 percent). Fifty-five percent believe there really are officials like the "Men in Black" who claim to be agents and threaten those who come forward with UFO sightings.?
