Prime suspect in Las Vegas Strip shooting has long criminal history

(Reuters) - The prime suspect in the death of an aspiring rapper shot and killed while driving a Maserati on the Las Vegas Strip has a lengthy criminal history with prior arrests on charges including robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping, police said on Monday.

Authorities have identified Ammar Harris, 26, as the man they believe opened fire from behind the wheel of his luxury sport utility vehicle on Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., 27, on the heart of the Las Vegas strip.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was fatally wounded and his sports car veered out of control, colliding with a taxicab in the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Killed in the cab when it exploded into flames were driver Michael Bolden, 62, and a passenger identified in local media reports as Sandi Sutton of Washington state.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Jose Hernandez said authorities were still pressing a multi-state manhunt for Harris, who is described as having several distinctive tattoos including a large black-eyed owl on his neck and small heart on his upper right cheek.

Hernandez said the list of Harris' prior arrests, which also included weapons and pandering charges, included only those in Clark County. It was not immediately clear if any had resulted in convictions.

An apparently brand new black Range Rover sport utility vehicle sporting paper dealer plates that Harris was believed to have been driving at the time of the shooting has been impounded, Hernandez said.

He declined to say where the luxury vehicle was found or if detectives were looking for other suspects in the brazen shooting in the desert resort city. Authorities had said after the shooting that several men were in the Range Rover and that it was not clear how many had fired on Cherry's silver Maserati.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie has said that the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino on the Strip.

The dramatic incident occurred less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z preview: a thin and light 10-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet

Sony Xperia Tablet Z handson

Notice the family resemblance? For Sony's latest Android tablet take, its Xperia Tablet Z, the company's extending the austere, omnibalance design (focus on all around symmetry and reflective surfaces) and waterproof certification of the Xperia Z to a 10.1-inch footprint and higher 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. Which means the unique, highly polarizing magazine-like fold of its predecessor, the Xperia Tablet S, has fallen by the wayside and, according to Sony, it's not likely to ever make a comeback. But a cosmetic evolution isn't all that's propping up the Xperia Tablet Z; its lightly-skinned Jelly Bean OS, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU and 2GB of RAM ensure above average performance for this Sony tab. So how does this Z of another frame fare? Follow on, as we take it for a brief test run.

Samsung touts market share, infographic style

Samsung infographic

Samsung shipped a hell of a lot of phones last year, and a bunch of them were smart phones -- 213,000,000 according to their latest infographic. That's a number which equates to over 30-percent of all smart phones shipped in 2012, and as we see is more than the total population of Brazil.

Samsung of course hopes to keep this trend going into 2013, with new releases like the Galaxy Note 8.0 and the upcoming Galaxy S4, as well as the multitude of entry-level phones and tablets for emerging markets. We'll have to see if this strategy works for them as well this year as it did in the last.

Moo Launches Android App to Control New NFC Business Cards

Moo.com has launched a new app on the Google Play store that enables users to add digital information to its soon-to-be released Near Field Communication (NFC) business cards.

The NFC by Moo app, designed for NFC-enabled Android devices running version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher, allows users to add custom URLs, contact information, map links, social networking profiles and data from other apps to a personalized business card ordered from Moo.

The app works alongside Moo?s updated Luxe Business Cards, which adds what the company is describing as a ?third side? to a physical card using an NFC chip. Although the app is live in the Google Play store this week, unfortunately the NFC business cards aren?t being launched officially until April.

Once users have ordered a compatible card though, they?ll be able to change the data stored on it through the new NFC by Moo app. Once they?ve specified the exact information that they want to share, sending it involves simply tapping or lightly placing the card on top of the recipient?s NFC-enabled device.

mooscreenshots Moo launches Android app to let users customize their data in its upcoming NFC business cards

The idea is that all of this data is then transferred automatically without the receiver having to manually copy or input the information.

Provided the new business cards are cheap enough, the addition of NFC will go a long way to giving the traditional contacts card some much-needed added value. A firm called intelliPaper is trying a similar solution using a USB drive embedded in an everyday piece of card. It?s arguably a slightly more reliable option, but does involve tearing the card to pieces before sliding it into your USB slot.

Moo.com launched an open beta for the new NFC-enabled business cards in September last year, giving the first 150,000 customers a chance to try it out in the real world.

Most notably, it followed the news that the London-based print company had bought Flavors.me, a personal identity site created by the web product incubator Hii Def.

There?s no word yet on whether the NFC by Moo app will eventually be released on other mobile platforms such as iOS ? although given that the iPhone 5 doesn?t include NFC, that might be a very long wait.

EU budget raises wildlife concerns

The European Commission is fighting a rearguard action to force farmers to work in a way that benefits the environment.

The Commission, which drafts EU laws, proposed that farmers should have to "earn" a third of their subsidies by protecting wildlife better.

The scheme was weakened as part of last week's grand bargain between EU leaders at their budget summit in Brussels.

It has also been under attack in the European Parliament.

A senior source in the Commission told BBC News: "All the measures we proposed to make the Common Agricultural Policy [CAP] greener are being diluted.

"We have to resist this on behalf of the public. Many people don't understand why farmers are getting aid when other parts of society don't," said the official, who requested anonymity.

"In an ideal world we wouldn't be paying farmers any aid, unless they were earning it by providing public goods like helping birds and bees that people value."

The source said the EU's political leaders had weakened the language on greening the CAP in a way that would enable farmers to collect subsidies for owning land in the same old way.

He also criticised MEPs for raising the prospect that farmers could go unpunished for breaking existing EU rules, and for proposing that farmers should be allowed to get double subsidies for helping the environment.

"The public really won't understand why MEPs think farmers can get away with breaking the law. And the proposal for double payments is ridiculous - it makes us look ridiculous. It has to be stopped."

Worries about wildlife

The decisions by MEPs and the Council (EU governments) to create more flexibility for farm subsidies were welcomed by some farming groups, but widely criticised by environmentalists.

Ariel Brunner from BirdLife Europe said: "Europe is offered a budget that scales back investment in the environment and caters for the usual fat cats that have been milking the system until now."

Martin Harper from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said the leaders' deal reduced proposed conservation spending by 11bn euros (?9.5bn; $15bn). "Wildlife across Europe will pay a heavy price for this terribly regressive deal. Since the 1980s Europe has lost 300 million farmland birds. How many more will we lose over the next seven years?"

The RSPB called on the UK government to interpret the rules in a way that benefited wildlife more.

There was some good news for environmentalists from the EU heads of government.

Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard welcomed a proposal that 20% of all EU spending would have to have a beneficial effect on the climate. She said this was "a major step forward".

Critics said the rules were so vague that all sorts of activities would simply be redefined as climate change spending. The row will resurface when the issue is considered in the European Parliament.

Apple CEO calls Einhorn lawsuit a "sideshow"

SAN FRANCISCO | Tue Feb 12, 2013 2:32pm EST

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook called David Einhorn's lawsuit against his company a "silly sideshow" but said the board is carefully considering the star hedge fund manager's proposal to issue preferred stock, calling it "creative."

Waving aside Einhorn's assertion that Apple is clinging to a "Depression-era" mentality, Cook said on Tuesday the board is in "very active discussions" on how to share more of its $137 billion hoard of cash and marketable securities.

Einhorn is suing Apple as part of a wider effort to get the iPhone maker to share more of its cash pile, one of the largest in the technology industry. Einhorn wants the company to issue perpetual preferred shares that pay dividends to existing shareholders, arguing that such a vehicle would be superior to dividends or share buybacks.

His clash with Apple centers on a proposed change to its charter that would eliminate the company's ability to issue "blank check" preferred stock at its discretion. Apple, which said the change would not preclude future issuance of preferred shares, is recommending shareholders vote in favor at its annual meeting on February 27.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. district court in Manhattan, challenges the bundling of the charter change with two other corporate governance-related proposals in "Proposal 2," in the proxy document for the annual meeting.

Cook gave Einhorn credit for the idea, but the usually calm chief executive turned slightly impatient when discussing the topic. He was dismissive of Einhorn's media and legal blitz - which included the lawsuit as well as multiple television and media interviews - terming it "bizarre."

Cook, who traded in his usual casual jeans attire for a suit jacket, said the more serious issue here was finding ways to return cash.

"This is a waste of shareholder money and a distraction and not a seminal issue for Apple. That said, I support Prop 2. I am personally going to vote for it," Cook told investors at Goldman Sachs' annual technology industry conference in San Francisco.

"My preference would be that everyone on both sides of the issue would take the money they are spending on this and donate it to a worthy cause," he said at the start of an hour-long, on-stage interview conducted by the investment bank.

The conflict over Prop 2 "is a silly sideshow," he added. Cook said he thought it "bizarre that we would find ourselves being sued for doing something good for shareholders."

Apple's share price has tumbled in recent months from a high of just over $700 last September. In early afternoon trade on Tuesday, the shares were down around 1.2 percent at $474.24.

DIMINISHING CLOUT

Apple stock is a mainstay of many fund managers' portfolios, with research firm eVestment estimating that 75 percent of U.S. large-cap growth managers had invested more than 5 percent of their portfolios in Apple as of the end of the third quarter of 2012.

But that also increases the pressure on Apple to give away a bigger portion of its cash hoard, which is rising as the share price declines and its outlook grows murkier.

Cook touched on Apple's acquisition strategy, saying that the company has looked at more than one large acquisition but that none passed the company's internal test.

But Apple could do one in the future, if the technology fits, he said.

"We have the management talent and depth to do it," he said. "We don't feel the pressure to go out and acquire revenue."

Cook, introduced briefly by Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, disputed a popular view that the smartphone market in developed markets may be saturated.

"On a longer-term basis, all phones will be smartphones and there's a lot more people in the world than 1.4 billion, and people love to upgrade their phones very regularly," he said.

The company is also trying to appeal to cost-conscious customers. Apple has moved to make the iPhone more affordable without introducing a specific cheaper phone, by cutting prices of older models.

"We didn't have enough supply of iPhone 4 after we cut the price," he said. "It surprised us, the level of demand for it."

The chief executive, who departed for Washington, D.C after the conference to join U.S. first lady Michelle Obama at the President's State of the Union address later on Tuesday, otherwise stuck pretty much to his regular script - with a sprinkling of lighter, more personal moments.

He grew animated when praising Apple employees or talking about the company's efforts to improve labor conditions across its sprawling supply chain, and touted the Apple store concept for its uplifting ability.

Cook said that when he is down, he just visits an Apple retail store. "It's like Prozac. It's a feeling like no other."

Sony Xperia Z nighttime video samples impress, quality smokes Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Nexus 4

1. FireDragon posted on 3 hours ago 0 0

Yes! Beat that - too. Lol.

2. oister85 posted on 3 hours ago 1 0

When is the xperia z coming-out

34. Droid_X_Doug posted on 1 hour ago 0 1

That could be the reason the Z flops - no one can buy it. Certainly not in the U.S.

36. redmd posted on 1 hour ago 0 0

Sony has a record of delayed releases.

3. _Bone_ posted on 3 hours ago 2 1

Go Exmor RS. Not that I have personal interest in the camera unit, but I want that appear in more phones and end up owning one. Here's hoping Sony cuts down the heavy noise reduction seen in earlier sample images, something a rival company done well with the same module.

4. harsh_doshi posted on 3 hours ago 9 3

to be honest the xperia z is overexposing the scene and also has purple tint to the white light this is not what I quite like

8. _Bone_ posted on 3 hours ago 4 6

I don't think it overexposes. The detail it needs to capture is everything BUT the lights and it manages to capture more of Paris at night with slightly better color reproduction than it's rivals (to be honest both the iP5 and the 920 beats those Androids on that front, they should've been included).

The worrying bit is the purple haze as you point out, and the random refocusing blurring up the picture every now and then. I think the Oppo does that too during video shoot. Look how stable the Samsung remains on the move.

10. PhoneArenaUser posted on 3 hours ago 1 1

I also have noticed that, but but according at least to this example still looks less affected with "Purple Halo" than iPhone 5.

15. bparkerson posted on 2 hours ago 4 2

I agree...This doesn't impress me as much as I had hoped...matter of fact I'm disappointed! IMO the Nexus and Note 2 look much better. The purple ruins it!
People be honest its clearly awful!

20. PhoneArenaUser posted on 2 hours ago 2 4

Disagree!
Yes, ther is a bit purplish effect but not so much that it would ruin everything.

In my opinion Sony Xperia Z wins in those departments:

Sound recording quality.
Low light conditions.
Focusing.

27. bparkerson posted on 2 hours ago 1 1

I guess I just had my hopes set too high. When I saw this headline I rushed to check it out. My jaw is still dropped open in disbelief...Not only was it not as good as I was expecting, its just really isn't good at all, compared to the Note 2.

35. PhoneArenaUser posted on 1 hour ago 0 0

Are you kidding? Look at the objects in the distance. Look at the car colours and peoples clothing colors, looking at LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, it is hard to tell what colour is object.

37. redmd posted on 1 hour ago 0 1

yes and all but I prefer my night sky dark not purple.

40. PhoneArenaUser posted on 55 min ago 0 0

Agree, but object colours are still more naturel on Sony Xperia Z. Look at at 1:07, it is hard to see people looking at LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, while looking at Sony Xperia Z you can even tell clothing colors.

21. neutralguy posted on 2 hours ago 1 0

to be honest, also, the hdr mode didn't help. Also, the microphone of NEXUS 4 is the s**ttiest microphone like, ever.

the purple tint destroyed the quality. Hope they test this phone compared to lumia 920 and iphone 5

5. Lboogey6 posted on 3 hours ago 0 4

why is the nexus 4 even part of this lol but its not all that impressive i have to say i did expect more

13. Tarzan posted on 3 hours ago 1 3

Just look closely at 1:07. You can't see people walking on the street neither in Note 2 nor in Nexus 4. Now the trolls will say there were no people walking at that time LOL

14. PhoneArenaUser posted on 2 hours ago 1 1

I can see people in all three, but in Sony Xperia Z more clearly and colorful!

29. Tarzan posted on 2 hours ago 0 0

Yep I could see them now after reading your reply, but they were hard to notice initially.

LOL @ 2 thumbs down. I was just being honest thats all. I have a Titanium Grey Note 2 but juggling between Sony Z and HTC One. I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

17. R-vjn posted on 2 hours ago 6 4

smokes out??? seriously??
It had that awful pinkish tint almost all the time, and not to forget the glare at times which the other two lacked. I'm a photographer myself so I feel like these two things in a video is kinda s**t.
Xperia Z may capture more light, but damn its not the way to capture like that..! Unrealistic and a lot of artifacting...

Note 2 performs better on my eyes..!

24. bparkerson posted on 2 hours ago 0 0

Thank you! An honest,non-bias reply.

22. bparkerson posted on 2 hours ago 0 0

I have watched this over and over and to me the Note 2 has the clearest picture. The Sony picks up better in low light but looks extremely hazey and the color is distorted. I rather it not be seen at all if it looks like this. I was hoping for much more...truly disappointed! "Sony Xperia Z nighttime video samples impress, quality smokes Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Nexus 4" headline is totally misleading and shows exactly how bias Phone Arena is. How can anyone not see what I'm seeing. I truly want Sony to do well as they once were my electronics manufacturer of choice, however articles like this only hurts Sony...Shame on you Phone Arena!!!

23. Yaldo_27 posted on 2 hours ago 1 0

25. jackhammeR posted on 2 hours ago 2 2

WOWO!~Z beated note 2 and nexus 4...which is a terrbile when it comes to camera capabilities....
Sony didn't include 920 because they knew it would smoke their mighty Z in a zippy fashion.
They didn't even compare the results with iphone 5.

28. jackhammeR posted on 2 hours ago 1 1

sony...one thing I got FYI.
software tricks won't help you if you don't invest in better optics and software-hardware integrity.
But you obviously don't know about that...if you did you would present a completely different approach

30. TerryCrowley posted on 2 hours ago 3 1

Cool, now compare it to the Lumia 920.

31. fanboy1974 posted on 1 hour ago 1 0

Call me crazy but night time is not suppose to be purplish in color. The Note 2 looks better to me and I'm not saying that because I own a Note 2. I actually like the night video on my wife's iPhone 5 over any of these.
I'd rather see a pitch dark sky than a grey noisy one with purple lighting affects.

33. InspectorGadget80 posted on 1 hour ago 0 1

39. PhoneArenaUser posted on 1 hour ago 0 1

"In my view I say GALAXY S III have better picture in low light."

In this test, there is no Samsung Galaxy S III.

"So before putting up the title like that LOOK AT your OWN VIDEOS first"

Look at the objects in the distance. Look at the car colours and peoples clothing colors, looking at LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, it is hard to tell what colour is object.

Look at at 1:07, it is hard to see people looking at LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, while looking at Sony Xperia Z you even can tell clothing colors. I even don't talk about sound recording quality.

Maybe it is hard to admit that for some LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners, but Sony Xperia Z is clear winner in this test.

41. eyedoc81 posted on 50 min ago 1 1

A lot of focus on the purple sky from the Xperia, but honestly, i'm not sure we would have perceived the sky to be black with our own eyes, especially due to the amount of light pollution from the city. Also, the blue searchlight coming from the Eiffel Tower was barely picked up by the Note or Nexus, and was clearly visible by the Xperia, so to me, that's a big improvement in low-light contrast.

44. JWS65 posted on 26 min ago 0 0

We don't know how the sky looked exactly over there. But I bet the darker sky in Note 2 is more realistic. Also Z video looks a little overexposed though image clarity is good.
