The Truths And Lies Per Home Improvement | Articles Fancy

Whether you're trying to increase your home?s worth or just prettify the place a little bit via a few needed improvements, you ought to know that there?s more that will go wrong than can go right. That's just how it is with improvement roles. Being a chippie is a true skill. The handyman is not invariably the best at home enhancements. This is why you have to read these tips.

When you're remodeling or taking on 1 or 2 DIY projects at once, think about working from the top down. It is important to use carefully thought out planning in deciding what order to do in each section of your project. It is usually smarter to begin to do things near the apex of the room and work your way down towards the floor. This way, any messes you make fall down to the parts below that have yet to be replaced.

Never make an effort to do electrical or plumbing work yourself with no regard for how easy the job may seem. Hire a professional to do the job, and ensure that they have all the acceptable licenses that your state requires. If you don't confirm that you may end up with a badly done job and no recourse.

To properly reconstruct your kitchen when taking on a do-it-yourself project, it is critical that you shut off the water. If any accidents happen such as accidentally hitting a pipe, the gaffe of flooding the entire kitchen can be prevented. It's way better to be safe than regretful.

Have you ever began a home improvement project and it became more that you ever predicted? One option that many other owners use is engaging a temporary labor service crew. If you decide to do this with your next massive project, make sure that there aren't any language issues. There should be one person with the crew that may speak both of your language and the language of the other workers.

One of the latest trends for home improvement is painting the ceilings in each room. Rather than a common white, it is extremely beneficial, relaxing, and extremely ornamental to color the ceilings of each room a few shades lighter of the same colour as the walls. Doing this brings the room more together and leads to a more relaxing and calming atmosphere.

Does a tree in front of your house look rough? Why don't you give your house a pleasant breath of clean air by getting this tree formed properly. If you do this, your front yard will change for evermore. There isn't any comparison between a trimmed tree and a unkempt one.

The most annoying thing in your home is a stuck window. You can easily fix your issue with a bit of silicone spray lubricant. Spray some lubricator onto an old cloth or rag and wipe it along the sliding tracks. The spray will help lubricate the tracks which make your window simpler to open up and close.

Recycle your plastic bottles to use as twine keepers! Smaller bottles like pill bottles work best to keep little appliance cords from tangling and larger bottles like those auto oil come in work great for huge shop extension cords. Just clean the bottles thoroughly, cut off the top and bottom, and use the resulting sleeve for your cords.

Not every home improvement job you tackle is going to be difficult. Some roles might even seem easy. But if you don't know how to properly pull them off, you're going to bring about a lot more harm than good in your house. What you have just read above were some great improvement tips. Use them to your benefit.

Sprint outlines LTE coverage plans at RCA Expo

Image
Sprint customer? Still supping from the 3G cup? Well if you were wondering if you'll ever get to try the sweet taste of LTE, wonder no more. The Now Network revealed a coverage map at the RCA Expo, and the image above was kindly grabbed by PC Mag's Sascha Segan. Those green areas are the locales that'll be getting LTE, and as you can see it's a fairly comprehensive -- though not altogether surprising -- spread. The rollout is said to be planned for completion by 2014, so you've still got time for that handset upgrade. Those of you in Montana or one of the many other blue areas on the map aren't entirely forgotten, though, as these regions will have roaming agreements in place, so no need for an extra contract just yet.

Renewable Energy Sources in Clarkstown

Every state in the nation is pushing to be greener and more environmentally friendly. They?re looking to reduce their carbon footprints, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and up their production of renewable energy. The state of New York is no exception and its Department of Environmental Conservation is working to bring in more Clarkstown renewable energy sources, as well as sources in other cities around the state.

?

Clarkstown renewable energy sources include solar energy, water and tidal power, biofuels, geothermal energy and the increasingly popular wind power. The Renewable Energy Task Force in New York made recommendations in 1998 that included sixteen groups of actions to improve Clarkstown renewable energy sources, as well as energy sources throughout the state.

According to the website for the task force, the actions will ?move New York toward greater renewable energy development and greater energy independence, which will attract clean-energy industries to New York State.?

?

The Renewable Energy Task Force Plan includes the following items to help bolster Clarkstown renewable energy sources, as well as sources throughout the state:

?

  • Reducing electricity use by 15 percent by 2015
  • Creating new standards for appliance efficiency
  • Creating more rigorous building codes
  • Investing in renewable energy projects throughout the state
  • Creating an expedited review process for wind power projects and other projects that have low carb dioxide levels

?

Like nearly every other state in the nation, New York adopted a Renewable Portfolio Standard back in 2004.

It helps promote creation and use of alternative energy sources and research to help in the creation and implementation of those sources. The goal of New York?s Renewable Energy Portfolio is to increase the amount of renewable electricity used throughout the state. The goal amount is 30 percent by 2015.

?

There are currently numerous incentives for New York?s businesses and residents to move to the use of renewable energy sources. Some of the incentives include:

?

  • The refundable clean heating tax fuel credit (for corporations and individuals)
  • Residential solar sales tax exemptions
  • Residential wood heating fuel exemption
  • Home performance with Energy Star financing

?

There is also a state rebate program that offers some of the following:

  • Residential energy efficient appliance rebate programs
  • Energy services programs for public entities
  • Green residential building programs
  • Solar thermal incentive programs
  • On-site small wind incentive programs
  • Industrial and process efficiency performance incentives

?

Many of the utility companies throughout New York all offer numerous incentives for green energy use. If you?re a customer of Central Hudson Gas & Electric, ConEd, Long Island Power Authority, National Fuel, National Grid, NYSEG, O&R Utilities or RG&E, you could qualify for the incentives. Call and ask your Clean Green Representative about them today!

Opel Ampera popular in ye old country, likely to meet sales goals unlike Volt
To say that Chevy's Volt hasn't had the smoothest inaugural year would be an understatement, but over on the other side of the pond, things couldn't be going more swimmingly for its badge-engineered cousin, the Opel Ampera. Sales are reportedly brisk with over 7,000 Europeans preordering the electrified hatchback, prompting the company to push its 2012 sales target from 8,000 to 10,000 units -- matching the figure Chevy had initially set, and then missed for its variant here in the US of A. That got us thinking, are Europeans the electrified forward-thinking mavericks we think they are? Or have they simply fallen prey to the Ampera's far better looks? Decide in the comments below.

Make Sales By Building A Eager Ready To Buy Your Product Email ...

business marketing

According to the majority of successful online entrepreneurs, the fastest and easiest method of building online wealth is by building a mailing list and then broadcasting promotional based messages to your audience. Makes sense, but there?s one problem with that concept; it?s a heck of a lot easier said than done. When you first thought of building your online business, you probably never even considered a mailing list as part of your marketing arsenal. In fact, for the most part, building a list and effectively marketing to it is one of the last things most of us ever do because we?re far too busy trying to create a reputation, build a brand and establish ourselves within our markets. But here?s the thing: If you actually focus ALL of your efforts on list building and email marketing, you can simultaneously achieve ALL of these things without ever having to spend a penny on advertising your business or spending every waking moment trying to push your brand out in front of your target audience. In fact, you can build a brand, make money, advertise your products, maximize your income AND still have time at the end of the day to focus on everything (and anything) else you want to do. To sum it up, email marketing simplifies every single aspect associated to building and running a successful online business. Just like with everything else, there is an easy way and a hard way of doing things. Most of us overlook the power of email marketing simply because we don?t understand how to do it. The problem is, that unless you start building your list, no matter how much time and money you throw into marketing your business, you will NEVER even come close to the profitability that a single list offers you.

Think about this for a second; If you had a built-in customer base, eager to receive your emails and responsive to all of your promotional broadcasts, imagine just how easy it would be to make money from a single email. Now, how long do you think it would take you to create a simple email, enter in a subject line and click ?send?? One email out to a responsive subscriber base.. a single click of your mouse and your automated cash machine kicks into high gear and begins to drive in sales.. Believe me, it?s the fastest and easiest method of making money online, regardless of the niche market you are involved in. In fact, email marketing can work effectively in EVERY single niche imaginable. Mainstream companies use email lists every day as a way of building brand awareness and maximizing their exposure with special offers, freebies, and time limited promotions. From weight loss products to relationship based newsletters, savvy marketers and businesses know that the real power backing every single product launch is a rock solid mailing list. So, don?t you think it?s about time you created yours?

April leap or May slog, Romney on pace to GOP nod

(AP) ? April looks good for Mitt Romney, with its string of Midwestern and Eastern primaries seemingly tailor-made for the Republican presidential front-runner.

In May, the GOP campaign turns again to the South, where the former Massachusetts governor has struggled. But at this point only a total collapse will deny him the nomination.

Romney has amassed more Republican National Convention delegates than all his competitors combined and is nearly halfway to the 1,144 needed to win. And he can put a dagger in the ambitions of any remaining rivals in June, with states like California and New Jersey, where he's positioned well with money and key endorsements.

In the meantime, he's poised to dominate the next month, with money, organization and geographic advantages.

"April will be much more favorable to Romney," said Dick Hug, a Maryland Republican fundraiser who supports Romney.

What lies ahead in Romney path to the nomination:

___

WISCONSIN TILTING ROMNEY'S WAY

Romney looks strong in Wisconsin, the big prize in Tuesday's three-state mini-sweepstakes.

The pressure is on Santorum in the former Pennsylvania senator's last chance to make the argument that he can win in the all-important industrial heartland.

Romney has had his number. He edged Santorum in Michigan and Ohio and won big in Illinois.

The formula has been simple: Swamp Santorum with TV ads and get big help from a pro-Romney group. Romney and that group, Restore Our Future, were spending about $3 million on television advertising in Wisconsin, a roughly 4-to-1 edge over Santorum and his allies.

It seems to be working. Romney has overtaken him, according to a Marquette University Law School poll published Monday.

Santorum has campaigned aggressively in conservative rural Wisconsin in the past week.

Romney arrives in the state on Friday, but he has already been sponsoring phone calls attacking Santorum's labor record, a hot topic where GOP activists are rallying to Gov. Scott Walker's recall election for signing anti-union legislation.

And Restore Our Future has been on television attacking Santorum since last week.

"Romney hasn't been here, but other groups are spending heavily for him," said Mary Buestin, a Republican national committeewoman from Wisconsin.

___

MARYLAND and DC FAVOR ROMNEY

Maryland and Washington, D.C., are a lock for Romney, despite his calling himself a Beltway outsider.

Romney has campaigned in Maryland. Santorum hasn't.

Then there's Restore Our Future again, spending nearly $900,000 on television ads for him there.

And Santorum failed to file to appear on the District of Columbia ballot.

Romney could really start to pull away Tuesday. Most of the delegates at stake in all three states are winner-take-all, not the proportional contests that dominated the first three months of voting.

___

APRIL LULL

Voting takes a three-week break after Tuesday. Romney will be raising money but also working behind the scenes to bring nervous conservatives into his tent.

This week he trumpeted praise from tea party icon Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and endorsements from Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and American Conservative Union President Al Cardenas.

Santorum sought to stoke doubts about Romney as a conservative by appearing outside the Supreme Court as it heard arguments about President Barack Obama's health care law.

"This is the most important issue in this election," Santorum said, referring to the 2010 law, which Romney's critics compare to one he signed in Massachusetts. "There's one candidate who's uniquely disqualified to make the case."

That would be Romney, of course.

___

BIG EAST TOURNEY

The rest of April doesn't look much better for Santorum than Tuesday's contests.

On April 24, Connecticut and Rhode Island should be scarcely different than the string of four New England states the former New England governor has already bagged.

The same for New York, where polls have shown Romney dominating, and for Delaware, where Restore Our Future is the only group advertising.

Restore Our Future is advertising in all five April 24 primary states, including Pennsylvania.

Romney shows no signs of ceding Santorum's home state. Polls show Santorum leading, but Romney has amassed support from key GOP leaders and fundraisers.

Santorum's Senate tenure and grass-roots following give him an edge, Pennsylvania GOP strategist Leslie Gromis Baker said. But Romney is poised to outperform expectations.

"Santorum may win it, but it may not be as convincing," said Baker, an adviser to former Gov. Tom Ridge and former President George W. Bush.

___

MAY: SOUTH RISES AGAIN

Santorum hopes to continue to drain delegates away from Romney in North Carolina and West Virginia on May 8.

Drawing support from evangelical conservatives, he has won four of eight Southern states while Romney has won only Florida and Virginia.

Indiana's Midwestern flavor and urban pockets give Romney hope on May 8. But the race looks southward again, favoring Santorum, with May 22 primaries in Arkansas and Kentucky.

Santorum's Christian following gives him the edge in Texas, but Romney can compete. On Wednesday, he added the support of former President George H.W. Bush to a long list of local and congressional GOP leaders.

Texas' huge delegate cache will be split according to the vote, and add to Romney's overall lead, even if he loses, Maryland's Hug said.

"You've got big ones in May like Texas, where, even if he doesn't win, he'll get his share of votes," he said.

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

(AP) ? The judge overseeing former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's child sexual abuse case on Thursday delayed the start of the trial by three weeks to early June, and prosecutors filed a lengthy court document that said the case should not be dismissed.

Judge John Cleland said the additional time was needed "to accommodate various logistical contingencies that have arisen," and the attorney general's office supported the postponement.

The prosecution's 21-page answer to a catch-all pretrial motion that Sandusky's lawyer submitted a week ago said the commonwealth had "broad latitude" to establish the dates of allegations in child sexual abuse cases. Sandusky has asked for more specifics about when the alleged crimes occurred.

"Defendant cannot exploit the appalling breadth of his own criminal conduct by claiming it encompasses so long a period as to hamper his defense," wrote chief deputy attorney general Frank Fina.

The 68-year-old retired defensive coordinator faces 52 counts involving 10 alleged victims over 15 years. He remains confined to his home to await trial. Prosecutors have accused him of engaging in a range of illegal behavior with the boys, including sexual assaults, allegations he denies.

Fina disputed Sandusky's argument that witness Mike McQueary will not be able to prove the charges involving a young boy allegedly seen by McQueary being sexually abused by Sandusky in the Penn State showers in 2002.

"The defense appears to argue that an eyewitness who sees an adult man having sex with a child cannot provide sufficient evidence of the conduct of crimes," Fina wrote. "It is noteworthy that the defense provides no legal support for such a specious assertion."

Cleland said a hearing remains scheduled for April 5 in Bellefonte to argue over the pretrial issues.

Fina wrote that the prosecution agreed with Sandusky's request to have prospective jurors questioned individually, and to sequester them at trial.

In Sandusky's omnibus pretrial motion last week, defense lawyer Joe Amendola argued some allegations were not sufficiently specific, others lacked evidence and the statute of limitations may have run in some cases.

Messages seeking comment on the prosecution's filing were left for Amendola on Thursday evening.

Fina noted that Sandusky waived a preliminary hearing that would have allowed him to test some of the evidence against him.

"He cannot now be heard to complain the information is insufficient, having conceded the ability of the commonwealth to prove each count if submitted to a fact-finder," Fina wrote.

Fina told Cleland that prosecutors expect to disclose additional information to the defense as the investigation continues. He asked the judge to allow Amendola to amend the omnibus pretrial motion two weeks after that additional information is received.

The prosecution filing said a search of Sandusky's home in June was authorized by a valid warrant, and that investigators legally intercepted conversations between Sandusky and two alleged victims, identified as Victim 1 and Victim 9 in court records. They include a seven-minute conversation with Victim 1 in June 2009, and a conversation with Victim 9 about four days after Sandusky was arrested in early November.

"It is denied that the interceptions were in any way illegal or improper," Fina said. "It is absolutely admitted that the defendant 'was unaware of and did not consent to the interceptions.'"

Aerobis Exercise-Your Body Needs It! | Flj3 WeightLoss Centre

Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is any physical exercise, performed at reasonable but increasing intensity, over a period of time. ?Aerobic? means ?with oxygen?. Cardiovascular exercise sometimes referred to as cardio respiratory exercise or aerobic exercise has a number of health benefits when done regularly. Aerobic exercise will strengthen your heart and lungs and will improve blood flow.

Aerobic exercise includes the training of the muscles to draw oxygen from the blood as well as fats and glucose with the goal of increasing cardiovascular stamina. Aerobics is used to improve overall fitness, burn more calories, tone and shape, and loss weight. The benefits of aerobic exercise are attained by increasing your heart rate and breathing for extended periods of time. During aerobic activity the body produces more energy and delivers more oxygen to your muscles.

There are numerous aerobic exercise routines, so the first priority is to find a program that works for you. Simple examples of this kind of exercise are walking, rowing, dancing, cycling, and swimming. Typically a duration of 15 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise activity is needed with a frequency of 3 to 5 days a week.

Aerobic exercise is the cornerstone of a healthy active life. Some people believe that aerobic exercise will tone and firm muscles, but in reality accomplishes only minor toning and firming. Weight training is required for the toning and firming of the muscles. A balanced approach is best where aerobic exercise is used to burn fat and deliver oxygen to the tissue, and weight training is used to promote lean body mass and burn more calories around the clock.

Beyond just the weight loss and increased metabolism, aerobic exercise has other benefits. It can help if you are having trouble sleeping. It can also improve your mood if done on a regular basis. Aerobic exercise is a super way to reduce stress and anxiety. Finally it gives you the energy needed to complete normal activities easily.

Scientists have found that aerobic exercise not only stops the brain shrinkage that usually starts around age 40s, specifically in the parts of the brain responsible for memory and higher cognition, but will actually reverse this shrinkage. A different study found that three hours a week of aerobic exercise provided noticeably cognitive benefits.
Bottom line, a healthy lifestyle includes aerobic exercise and when done regularly will have a whole list of benefits. What is keeping you from getting a routine started? Good luck and good health!

PSA: Real LCD HDTV refresh rates are getting harder to find behind marketing fluff

Image
Electronics makers love a spec they can get behind and make the center point of their marketing efforts -- no matter how useless it is as a comparison. The undisputed be all arms race HDTV metric for the past few years, LCD refresh rates, has recently become even muddier according to HD Guru. Terms like Clear Motion Rate (Samsung) and Scenes Per Second (Vizio) are meant to confuse the customer while resembling the somewhat useful (and, as of late, unmentioned on the box) refresh rate. Our advice? Ignore this spec completely and instead find a TV that can accurately display your favorite content at its native frame rate (24, 30 or 60) -- leave all that soap-opera looking frame interpolation technology to the modern day twelve o'clock flasher.

Scientists describe humanity's global impact as 'The Great Acceleration' and offer ominous outlook: An uncertain future on a much hotter world

Time is running out to minimize the risk of setting in motion irreversible and long-term climate change and other dramatic changes to Earth's life support system, according to scientists speaking at the Planet Under Pressure conference, which began in London today.

The unequivocal warning is delivered on the first day of the four-day conference opening with the latest readings of Earth's vital signs.

In subsequent days at the meeting, nearly 3,000 experts spanning the spectrum of interconnected scientific interests, will examine solutions, hurdles and ways to break down the barriers to progress. The conference is the largest gathering of experts in development and global environmental changes in advance of June's UN "Rio+20" summit in Brazil.

"The last 50 years have without doubt seen one of the most rapid transformations of the human relationship with the natural world," says speaker Will Steffen, a global change expert from the Australian National University.

"Many human activities reached take-off points sometime in the 20th Century and sharply accelerated towards the end of the century. We saw a 'Great Acceleration'."

"It is the scale and speed of the Great Acceleration that is truly remarkable. This has largely happened within one human lifetime."

Key indicators of the planet's state, according to the speakers: higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, phosphorus extraction and fertilizer production causing many large dead zones in coastal areas; rising air and ocean temperatures; melting sea ice, polar ice sheets and Arctic permafrost; rising sea levels and ocean acidification; biodiversity loss; land use changes; and growing consumption of freshwater supplies and energy by a growing global population, of which billions of people still lack even the most basic elements of well-being.

At a planetary level, humanity is altering the global carbon cycle, water cycle and nitrogen cycle, says Professor Steffen. Indeed, humans now produce more reactive nitrogen artificially than all natural processes on land.

"Where on Earth are we going?" he asks, underlining several potentially dangerous environmental "tipping points" foreseen, among them the melting of the polar ice sheets and the thawing of perennially frozen northern permafrost soils.

Current research estimates the permafrost alone stores the equivalent of roughly twice the carbon in the atmosphere, he says. Under a "high warming scenario," projected releases of greenhouse gas emissions from melting Arctic permafrost are the equivalent of 30-63 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide by 2040, 232-380 Gt by 2100, and 549-865 Gt by 2300. By comparison, fossil fuel emissions today are roughly 10 Gt per year.

"The key point is: Either we turn around a lot of these trends the carbon dioxide trend, deforestation and so on or we allow them to continue and push beyond critical thresholds."

"There are signs that some drivers of global change are slowing or changing," says fellow speaker Professor Diana Liverman, co-Director of the Institute of the Environment at the University of Arizona and visiting Oxford University academic.

"Population growth is slowing and will level off; the intensity of energy and carbon required for a unit of production is declining; agricultural intensification is slowing and forests are starting to expand in some regions."

"On the other hand, average resource consumption per person, already high in some regions, is growing steeply in emerging economies even as many poor people cannot meet basic human needs.

"In some countries people are consuming far too much, including carbon, water and other resources embodied in trade. We have a long way to go to turn things around."

Liverman notes a time lapse animation offering vivid evidence that Earth has entered a new geological epoch hallmarked by the profound ecosystem impacts of one species humans so much so that it marks an entirely new geological timespan: the "Anthropocene."

Online at www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEMse22h8c8, it illustrates the dramatic growth of carbon dioxide emissions from the start of the industrial revolution -- spreading from the UK in 1750 across Europe, North America and to Japan by 1900.

"By the end of the 20th Century we have high emissions in China, India, Europe and eastern North America but relatively little across Latin America and Africa. Here lies the core of the debate about responsibilities for climate change in relation to historical and per capita emissions."

She also refers a recent UK study showing the highest income earners are responsible for three times the level of emissions compared with lowest income earners.

"In countries with high income inequality, the richest 10% of the population may be responsible for more than 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions and the growing middle classes of many developing or transitional countries are developing consumption habits that add to the burden on the earth system."

Says conference co-chair and UNESCO director of the science-policy division, Dr Lidia Brito: "If you like, our presenters today are akin to doctors saying 'look, you may not feel too sick at the moment but you've got high blood pressure, your cholesterol is going up, and your lifestyle is not conducive to good health.'"

"There is time to turn these trends around and promising, more positive messages will be delivered by colleagues in days to come. We look forward to discussions of our most promising options, the barriers to change and to a prescription for the future."

Cheney older, waited longer than average for heart transplant

CHICAGO (Reuters) - At 71, former Vice President Dick Cheney was older than average for a heart transplant, but doctors said on Sunday that advances in care have made it possible for older patients to still be good transplant candidates.

And not only was he older than the typical patient, but he waited longer than average as well -- 20 months vs six months to a year.

Doctors said Cheney must have been in excellent health to have survived five heart attacks and still been eligible for a heart transplant. Cheney is recovering at a Washington-area hospital after transplant surgery on Saturday.

"He's obviously received superb care," said Dr. James Kirklin, director of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a recent past president of the International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation.

"He's an elderly man who likely has taken very, very good care of himself to be in this good shape at age 71. It appears that he has been relatively lucky to have avoided major organ problems that would have precluded a transplant," said Kirklin, who is not treating Cheney.

Hospitals have traditionally set 65 as the upper limit for heart transplant. But older patients increasingly are getting them, and there is no absolute cut-off age.

"Dick Cheney's overall risk would probably be a bit higher than a 60-year-old, but the most important thing would be the function of his organs, which we analyze in great detail."

Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam, chief of cardio-thoracic surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said his hospital has been doing transplants on increasingly older patients.

"They're not that different. The key is co-morbidities," he said, referring to other chronic conditions that affect the health of the transplant recipient.

Older patients undergo a rigorous evaluation and are screened for cancer, neurological abnormalities, kidney and liver dysfunction and other problems.

Jeevanandam said a 71-old-year-old man has a 10-year survival rate of 60 percent to 65 percent. "I can't predict how Cheney will do," he said.

EXTENDING LIFESPAN

Assuming that Cheney's kidneys and other organ systems were working properly at the time of the transplant and he suffers no issues with organ rejection, the latest procedure could extend the former vice president's life by a decade or so, said Dr. Randall Starling, a specialist in cardiac transplants at the Cleveland Clinic.

"They have to be an excellent candidate without significant risk factors because age itself is a risk factor," Starling said.

In order to qualify for a heart transplant, patients must have end-stage heart failure but be otherwise healthy enough to undergo heart transplant surgery, in which a donor heart is implanted into the patient to replace a heart that has become so diseased it is no longer able to pump enough blood to keep organs working properly.

Cheney has survived five heart attacks -- his first at age 37 -- and his care has run the gambit of interventions, ranging from coronary stents to prop open blocked heart arteries, heart bypass surgery to re-route blood flow around diseased arteries, an implantable heart defibrillator to safeguard against potentially dangerous rhythms.

In July 2010, Cheney underwent a procedure to have an artificial heart pump implanted called a ventricular assist device or VAD that takes over the pumping function of a diseased heart for patients in end-stage heart failure.

The device is often used as a bridge to a heart transplant, offering a way of keeping organ systems in good enough working order for the patient to accept a heart transplant.

Doctors said Cheney could have stayed on the VAD, which has increasingly become a permanent solution for some patients.

Cheney had been on a waiting list for a heart transplant for 20 months, which was a bit longer than the average wait time of six months to a year, according to a study published last year in the journal Circulation.

Some 3,000 Americans are on the waiting list for a heart transplant on any given day, and only about 2,000 donor hearts are available each year, according to the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute.

"He waited quite a long time -- nearly two years on a device. Even though the waiting lists are very long, that would be an extended wait for a heart transplant," Kirklin said.

Patients on VAD devices can experience blood clots and infections, and doctors said it was not clear whether a complication with his VAD device may have suddenly moved Cheney higher on the transplant list.

About 5 million Americans have heart failure, and an estimated 400,000 to 700,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed each year, according to the Heart Failure Society of America.
