Killer cantaloupe, scary sprouts ? what to do? (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Avoid foreign produce. Wash and peel your fruit. Keep it refrigerated. None of these common tips would have guaranteed your safety from the deadliest food outbreak in a decade, the one involving cantaloupes from Colorado.

Whether it's sprouts or spinach, turkey or hamburger; whether the government conducted double, triple or quadruple inspections, the truth is that no food will ever be completely free of risk.

And a few foods have become so risky that certain people such as children, pregnant women and the elderly may do best to avoid them altogether until growers and the government figure out how to make them safer, some food experts say.

An unappetizing fact: Although the current cantaloupe outbreak has been tied to just one farm in Colorado, it's at least the 19th outbreak involving that melon since 1984. It's also the first one caused by listeria, a germ that actually likes to be in the refrigerator and thrives in this fruit, which cannot be cooked unless you want to eat melon mush.

Listeria also prompted a California farm to recall bags of chopped romaine lettuce on Thursday because of possible contamination, though no illnesses have been reported. The greens from Salinas-based True Leaf Farms went to an Oregon distributor and possibly at least two other states ? Washington and Idaho.

So what should you do if you see cantaloupe on a salad bar or at the grocery store? Can you be sure all of the tainted stuff has been pulled from the market, since the last bad melons were shipped on Sept. 10? What if no one knows where the cantaloupe was grown?

"If the store can't tell them or the restaurant can't tell them, I would not buy it at all," said Chris Waldrop, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America.

Laura Anderko, a Georgetown University public health expert, went a step further.

"Honestly, as a nurse, I would tell people don't eat the cantaloupe until this thing resolves itself," she said. "This stuff happens because our system is not as tight as it needs to be."

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has confirmed 13 deaths and 72 illnesses in the outbreak so far, has not told people to stop buying cantaloupe. However, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration cannot even say where all of the tainted melon went, because it was sold and resold to many distributors across the nation.

"When in doubt, throw it out," is the CDC's advice to consumers who have any cantaloupe whose origins they can't determine.

"Even if the cantaloupe is gone, you need to wash the drawer or shelf it may have been on" to make sure other foods don't become contaminated, said Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Beyond that, each outbreak brings fresh lessons on how to make produce safer. And while some of these things aren't guarantees, they can cut the odds you'll lose at the food safety lottery.

Some new tips food experts offered Thursday:

? Shop more often and consume fresh fruits and vegetables within a few days. This gives germs less chance to multiply and gives you more nutrients from your food, too.

? Don't just wash a melon. Scrub it under running water to rinse off any dislodged germs, and let it dry. If you cut it while it's still wet, "you may be sliding the pathogens more easily from the outside to the inside" on the knife, DeWaal said.

? Keep the fridge cold, 40 degrees or lower. Higher than that can let germs grow.

? Don't get a false sense of security if you buy organic produce. That just means less pesticide ? not necessarily fewer germs.

? Consider dropping especially risky foods from your diet. Bean sprouts are not safe for children, pregnant women or people with weak immune systems and certain diseases, but that doesn't mean they're OK for everyone else, said Michael Doyle, a microbiologist who heads the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety.

Doyle also consults for a lot of food companies, including a major spinach producer that sought help after outbreaks involving that vegetable. He has chaired a food safety advisory council for McDonald's for many years.

"I don't eat sprouts at all," he said. If harmful bacteria are in the seeds "they grow in the sprouting process, and there's nothing to kill them unless you cook them."

You can go too far with this, though. Even Dr. Robert Tauxe, the CDC's top food-germ sleuth, once confessed over lunch that he refused to live in fear, and that there were only a few foods he absolutely wouldn't eat, such as raw oysters and unpasteurized milk.

Beyond that, safe handling and cooking can generally keep most foods safe, he said.

The big picture is important, said Robert Gravani, a food scientist at Cornell University.

A gazillion pounds of produce are consumed each day, and only a tiny fraction cause problems, he said.

"I have a hard time saying, `Don't eat produce,' because of all of the health benefits," he said. "Everything we do has some degree of risk attached to it."

Selling You Home With Out A Real Estate Agent

This article has been viewed 3 times.

If you happen to?re considering, ?I ought to promote my home without a realtor,? the present actual property market and explosion of the Internet will make your job easier.

Sell My Home With out A Realtor

In case you are trying to sell a home with out a realtor, you are often known as a ?FSBO? seller. FSBO stands for the phrase ?for sale by owner.? Though FSBO sellers have at all times existed, they?ve turn out to be rather more prevalent in the previous couple of years as a result of two main factors.

Scorching Real Estate Market

An insanely hot real estate market has made realtors somewhat irrelevant in lots of parts of the country. As an example, properties in San Diego, California had been known to be on the market for less than weeks on common in early 2005. Be mindful, this was the common time it took to sell a home including the run down messes. In such a market, many householders started wondering why they have been paying six % commissions to a realtor who didn?t need to do much.

Internet Use

The creation of FSBO actual estate listings websites has exploded over the past three or four years. As patrons and sellers became extra familiar with these websites, they often searched online for homes as an alternative of driving areas with a realtor. This resulted in sellers wondering why they need to pay a commission of 6 p.c to a realtor when a website like fsboamerica.org solely charged $25 a month to checklist a home on the site. Many couldn?t give you a reason.

No Realtor

The decision to promote you house without a realtor is one you need to make carefully. In case you?re comfortable with the gross sales course of, going FSBO makes all of the sense within the world. When you?re not snug with the negotiating process, then you could need to think about using a realtor. Ultimately, your first step ought to be to purchase a FSBO book in your local bookstore or visit a FSBO website and skim up on what is involved.

Should I split my retirement investment options? | Roth Ira

September 27, 2011 ? Consultant ?

I am in my mid 20s and have both a 401K as well as a Roth IRA and small amounts of stock. Am I spreading myself too thin? Should I focus all my efforts on one or the other in order to maximize my earning power for retirement? I am aware that I have time to be aggressive, but I lost quite a bit in the market after the tech crash and have yet to realiz my original investment from the stocks. Thanks.

Train4TradeSkills News: Will Ed Balls 5 point plan save the ...

Shadow Chancellor tries to stop the economy from being Balls-ed up and aims to create thousands of construction jobs.

The Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has unveiled the Labour Party?s five-point plan to revitalise the economy.

Mr Balls was speaking at the Labour Party?s conference and has proposed plans to boost the economy by cutting VAT and offering tax breaks ? all to move things forward, start new projects and create new jobs.

Balls? 5-point plan for the economy includes:

? Repeating the bank bonus tax ? and using ?the money to build 25,000 affordable homes and guarantee a job for 100,000 young people?

? Bringing forward long-term investment projects, such as schools, roads and transport, to create jobs

? Reversing January?s ?damaging? VAT rise now for a temporary period

? Immediate one-year cut in VAT to 5% on home improvements, repairs and maintenance

? One-year national insurance tax break ?for every small firm which takes on extra workers, using the money left over from the government?s failed national insurance rebate for new businesses?

Of course these are Labour?s suggestions and the government don?t have to make these changes, but Mr Balls have said they would back the proposals if the coalition agreed to them.

Out of Balls? proposals, the one year VAT cut to 5% on home improvements would help the construction industry massively. Homeowners would get more repairs done on their homes and this would create new jobs for contractors. If they wanted to do the work themselves, the DIY industry would thrive.

Bringing forward stalled projects would also give the construction industry a much-needed boost. Deputy PM recently said that he wants to kick-start 40 new infrastructure projects and Balls? plans seem to be echoing that. If this does happen, it would provide a welcome boost for the industry and create new jobs.

What do you think about this ? will Balls? plans work? Let us know what you think and comment below or on our Facebook page.

Making the most of PR in the food and drink sector | Hotel and Jobs ...

The food and drink sector is especially competitive, and an effective PR strategy can give you and your product the edge.

Below are some tips on getting started.

Before you begin?

In order for your consumer PR to have any effect at all, you first need to ensure that your product is in the stores and available for customers to buy ? consumer titles won?t even consider promoting your product if it isn?t widely available. Likewise, the more stores you can get your product in to, the more likely you are to get press coverage.

Trade titles

If you have a new product that you want to shout about, this is the place to do it. When your press release is ready, call your chosen magazine. Explain briefly who you are, why you?re calling and what the press release is about, then ask who the best person to send it through to via email would be.

Once you?ve established these contacts, by sure to check in with the journalists regularly ? building a relationship can be extremely beneficial as it is more likely to lead to repeat coverage.

Consumer titles

While many consumer titles incorporate some food and drink coverage, opportunities are minimal and highly sought after.

Identify which titles are being read by your target market and focus your attention on these; it?s better to have a considered, targeted campaign applied where it matters than a blanket campaign that ends up being nothing more than a blip on journalists? radar.

There?s little point in targeting recipe pages as the vast majority of these are written in house; you best bet is ?Tried and Tested? and ?New in store? slots.
Try and establish a point of contact at each title so that they become familiar with you and your products ? you?re more likely to get positive feedback this way.

It?s also worth considering running competitions with consumer titles; guaranteed exposure for a small outlay (i.e. the cost of the prize) shouldn?t be undervalued.

Always be sure you have a plentiful supply of samples that you?re willing to send to journalists so they can review your products; it?s not a good idea to keep them waiting as it could reflect negatively on your business.

Instore titles

Many of the major supermarkets now have their own magazines. Getting your product featured here can make a huge difference, so try to build a good relationship with the stores.

Enhance Your Business With Franchise SEO | | Reviews ...

Secaucus NJ Totowa real estate

Get more leads for your franchisees off the web using franchise SEO.? Or seize more leads of people looking to purchase a franchise. Search engine optimization helps franchise companies with their online marketing as well as dealership based model companies effectively generate more leads for their franchisees. In addition, SEO helped them acquire massive development in raising the amount of franchisee sign ups. Internet franchise marketing is very effective; no longer should you worry about providing your franchisee with leads. Seo will take care of that for you, in addition to obtaining more interested investors and those looking to purchase a franchise.

Buyers are increasingly making their decisions according to what they see on Google and Yahoo. A company with a great search engine ranking will have much more visitors to its Web site and hence greater success. Several businesses depend heavily on paid promotions to get desired outcomes.? But handling these promotions can be costly and time consuming. Franchising is an organization model in which many distinct individuals could open a branch of the parent corporation.? A parent company permits these owners to make use of the company?s strategies; in exchange, the franchisee pays a preliminary fee and royalties based on income.

Some franchise organizations like to have a single company internet page and list all franchisee locations on the internet page. The main advantage of a single corporation internet site is that a corporation has full control and any Web optimization effort is focused on just one web site.? Nevertheless, it?s recommended that franchise organizations allow their franchisees to have their own local internet sites. This has an extra benefit simply because it will help the two to achieve higher ranking locally and nationally. By having a local web site ? it becomes a lot easier for local proprietors to incorporate social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, etc. It also becomes simpler to interact with users at a local level ? which produces far more trust.

The parent franchise company will benefit by utilizing the power of numerous location particular sites ? from a Seo and brand awareness angle. Franchise online advertising is a critical part of franchise lead generation. Prospective franchise buyers who learn about your franchising opportunities through Internet search engines like MSN, Google and Yahoo want to be driven to your site to know your franchise marketing message.

By analyzing key words associated with your sector ? and the key phrases used by your competition ? reputation management for franchises experts determine the ideal blend to incorporate in your web site content, and develop the ideal structure for your site to be sure that it leverages more franchise leads globally. A franchise internet marketing team consists of writers who?re adept at producing quality content that?s also optimized for applicable keywords. Additionally, it evaluate your web presence and provide franchise SEO tools and tips for enhancing your current site, or make recommendations for reconstructing it, including branding, graphics, and navigation. All of these franchise SEO components put together can produce a power marketing tool and can result in considerably greater profitability for your franchise.

John Hrabe: Dead Poets Society Lied: What the Movies Don't Teach You About Student Resistance

As a white, libertarian-leaning, middle-class kid, every scene of Dead Poets Society appealed to my maudlin sensibilities, and none more than the film's dramatic conclusion.

The school's headmaster Mr. Nolan warns, "One more outburst from you or anybody else, and you're out of this school." Ten students are undeterred. They defiantly stand on their desks and call out, "O Captain! My Captain!"

Prep school pi?ce de r?sistance. I was moved.

Movie critic Roger Ebert, on the other hand, was moved "to throw up."

"Dead Poets Society is a collection of pious platitudes masquerading as a courageous stand in favor of something: doing your own thing, I think," he wrote in the opening line of his scathing review.

Which makes me wonder what the fastidious movie critic would think of an alternate ending, one in which the students are punished by the school and then brought up on misdemeanor charges by the local district attorney for conspiracy and disrupting a meeting?

Oh wait, that isn't fiction, but the real life story of the "Irvine 11." In February 2010, members of UC Irvine's Muslim Student Association systematically interrupted a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren. On September 23, an Orange County jury found ten of the students guilty of misdemeanor charges and sentenced them to three years of informal probation.

Hollywood lied to us.

To be clear, I'm not defending the content of the protests, nor do I support the students' outbursts. Freedom of speech doesn't include a heckler's veto, and the students could have protested the ambassador in more constructive ways.

"Obviously, if we are going to have a free marketplace of ideas, people need to have a civil forum in which to speak," argues Dr. Craig Smith, Director of the Center for First Amendment Studies at California State University, Long Beach. "Such forums may be picketed and shouting can take place outside. However, speakers must be given the right to present their ideas without interruption if they are to make their case for their ideas."

But, Dr. Smith also wisely points out that the heckler's veto wasn't the only First Amendment question in this case. There was also the issue of whether Muslim students were singled out and selectively prosecuted because of their views.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the District Attorney selectively prosecuted," said Hussam Ayloush, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations - Greater Los Angeles Area, "because the students were Muslim, the speaker was an Israeli diplomat, and the verbal protests centered on Israel's long history of war crimes."

It strains credulity to think that the politics of the speakers didn't affect the decision to prosecute. Had this been a raucous student council meeting about the cost of tuition, the case would have ended in a campus administrative hearing. You'd be laughed out of any prosecutor's office if you tried to turn it into a criminal case. Most hecklers not only avoid prosecution, but get a bigger platform because of their disruptions. Anyone remember Rep. Joe Wilson and Joe the Plumber?

In Orange County, Muslim Americans have other reasons to believe that there's a double standard for free speech. Earlier this year, Villa Park City Councilwoman Deborah Pauly protested an Islamic charity event and exclaimed, "I know quite a few Marines who will be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise." Just this month, San Juan Capistrano City Councilman Derek Reeve said at a council meeting that he named his dog Muhammad to intentional provoke Muslim Americans and make a statement about free speech. These incidents explain why Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Irvine School of Law, described the verdict as keeping an "open wound" in the community.

If you protect the offensive, anti-Islamic rhetoric of Orange Curtain councilmembers, you have to protect the rights of the UC Irvine Muslim Student Association. As Ayloush put it, "No topic should be off limits and no public official or country should be above criticism."

When controversial speakers are prosecuted under ridiculous "disturbing the peace" statutes, it sets up a forced choice for freedom. Every speaker must live in fear of prosecution, or worse, only the dissenting speakers get quashed. Either scenario is unacceptable because both outcomes lead to less speech.

Our natural reaction to contrasting views should always be to speak out ourselves, not shut our opponents up. Muslim students get the same First Amendment protections as Israeli ambassadors. I'm entitled to my review of Dead Poets Society; and Roger Ebert has a right to his -- even if he's wrong.

House passes FY2012 ... - American Society of Military Comptrollers

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Early this morning, the House passed (219Y-203N) a FY2012 Continuing Resolution (CR) that would keep the government operating until November 18, 2011.? Passage came a little more than a day after the House had rejected essentially the same bill.?

On Wednesday, the House failed to approve the CR as 48 Republicans voted against the bill and only six Democrats supported it.? After that vote, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) met with Republican members in an effort to persuade enough Republican members to change their vote and ensure passage.? Otherwise, he reportedly told the group, he would have to strike a deal with Democrats to gain their support by shedding the $1.5 billion offset to disaster assistance funding included in the bill.? His efforts appear to have succeeded as 24 Republicans switched their votes when the bill came up for a vote again.

The House-passed CR would fund government agencies between October 1 and November 18 at a rate of $1.043 trillion, the amount for FY2012 set in the Budget Control Act of 2011.? The bill also includes $3.65 billion in disaster relief assistance for Hurricane Irene, recent wildfires, floods and tornadoes, the Mid-Atlantic earthquake, and other natural disasters.?

The House-passed bill includes offsets of $1.6 billion to disaster funding.? In addition to a $1.5 billion cut from the Department of Energy?s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program included in the original House bill, ?the CR adds a $100 million rescission from another Department of Energy program involving loan guarantees to the energy firm Solyndra.? Solyndra has recently has declared bankruptcy and has come under federal investigation.? Almost all House Democrats opposed any offsets to disaster funding.

Rep. Harold Rogers (R-KY), chair of the House Appropriations Committee (HAC) urged the Senate to act quickly on the House bill.? But, Senate Democrats are unwilling to accept both the House bill?s low level of disaster funding and any offsets to that funding.?

Earlier this month, the Senate passed a bill that provides $6.95 billion to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster assistance, without offsets. ?In a statement after the House vote, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) pressed for the higher disaster funding level and said the Senate will reject the House bill.

So, with both the House and Senate wanting to go on recess next week and FY2012 only eight days away, congressional leaders of both parties will have to resolve their differences quickly if they want to avoid what almost everyone in Congress professes not to want:? a government shutdown.

Health and Fitness ? The Symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome You ...

Are you aware that there are a lot of people all over the world who are suffering from the symptoms of leaky gut? This may come as a surprise considering that rarely do doctors or other health practitioners recognize the symptoms of leaky gut. For most of them, it might be difficult to make a diagnosis considering that most of the symptoms of leaky gut are very general that it could lead to just about anything. Unfortunately, some of its symptoms may be a bit difficult to associate with the leaky bowel syndrome. Most doctors end up giving prescriptive medication only to treat the symptom, but not really the root cause of the problem.

Perhaps it is important to understand what happens when a person is suffering from leaky bowels. In truth, this disease is an effect of a person?s long term suffering from its basic symptoms. It is only when it is too late that this disease is diagnosed. It begins with the inflammation of the intestinal wall which later results to the leaking of the deadly toxins into the blood stream. The symptoms of leaky gut only show how detrimental this disease is to a person?s life.

When the leaking happens, the toxins enter into the bloodstream which only means that the rest of the body is vulnerable to diseases. A person?s immune system is exposed to developing diseases because the good bacteria can no longer battle with the bad bacteria because they have been overworked trying to save the person?s health from its detrimental failure. In addition, those who are feeling the symptoms of leaky gut will experience what the experts call as the autoimmune system of the body which only means that the immune systems works overtime to be able to fight off the bad bacteria. However, since the poisonous toxins are already in the bloodstream, even the autoimmune response of the body can not survive the fast growing number of bad bacteria in the body.

The early symptoms of leaky gut do not only mean that people can suffer from the inflammation of the intestinal wall, but it could also mean the development of more serious diseases. More than that, the leaking of the toxins into the bloodstream does not only make a person experience the symptoms of leaky gut, but it could also lead to the development of serious diseases that could affect the person?s major organs. One of the first organs that could experience this problem is the kidney and all people know that once the kidneys do not function well everything else falls.

In addition to that, the human liver could also be one of the more important main organs of the body that could be affected when one is suffering from the symptoms of leaky gut. As more toxins are excreted in the bloodstream, the liver works to the point of fatigue and can no longer fight off the toxins. The symptoms of leaky gut syndrome may also be the signs of a more serious health problem. It is not only important that people take a look leaky bowels closely, but they have to start thinking of ways on how to prevent it from happening to them or to the people that they know. If they continue to live unhealthy lifestyles, they might just end up making ourselves more vulnerable to serious infections that could even lead to their death.

There are still people who are not aware that they are already suffering from the leaky bowels. If you are feeling the early symptoms of leaky gut, it is best to seek help from professional doctors.

"Can we ever really know Ernest Hemingway?"

AP

Ernest Hemingway, cradling a shotgun.

As Paul Hendrickson concedes early in his new book, "Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost, 1934-1961," the world isn't in dire need of another Papa bio. "Ernest Hemingway," he writes, "has been examined by so many scholars and memoirists and respected biographers and hangers-on and pretenders and doctoral students desperate for a dissertation topic that I feel sometimes we have lost all sense of who the man really was."

So Hendrickson, a winner of the National Books Critics Circle Award for his 2003 book "Sons of Mississippi," decided to go at his subject in a roundabout way. The result is a book that is as much about Hemingway himself as it is his relationship with Pilar, the 38-foot seafaring vessel on which he spent endless hours during the final decades of his life. On board Pilar, Hemingway wrote, loved, argued, drank and, for a time during World War II, went looking for enemy submarines. And it's a boat, Hendrickson believes, that may have had a distinct impact on the evolution of Hemingway's prose.

In a recent phone interview, Hendrickson talked about traveling to Cuba to see Pilar for himself; his delight in locating a still-living Hemingway contemporary; and how the book took root in a long-ago meeting with a stranger who just happened to be Ernest Hemingway's brother.

How did you get started on the book?

This book, in a sense, goes back through at least three decades and four intervening projects. It may have been seeded in the winter of 1980, when my wife and I were fleeing the winter snows for Bimini. There, waiting to go over in a little seaplane, a 20-minute hop from Miami to Bimini, there was this man with a big Hemingway beard and tattered clothes and tennis shoes and a grocery sack under his arm. I whispered to my wife, "That's got to be Ernest Hemingway's little brother." I was an amateur Hemingway student by then, and I knew about [Leicester Hemingway] "the Baron," 16 years younger than Hemingway, whom Hemingway mostly despised. But here was this guy going to Bimini, where Hemingway had haunted and made famous. As luck would have it in this 12-passenger Grumman Goose seaplane, he took a seat right ahead of us, and I leaned forward and said, "Sir, by any chance are you Ernest Hemingway's brother?" And there was this bared-teeth grin, and he said, "Yeah, and if you're lucky it'll get you a cup of coffee." We got along fabulously. He told me that weekend some inside stories that to me were not only incredible but incredulous. Most of them turned out to be true. Other books went on, and my job at the Washington Post went on, but I never really forgot that encounter.

You write, "We've had far too many Hemingway biographies." Is that why you decided to use the boat as a narrative device?

I do believe we've had far too many biographies and critical explanations of the man, each one contradicting the last. I didn't want to join that group. If I was going to do something, I wanted to do something different, which would lead to point B. I can only do what I can do. When I've gotten in trouble with books before it's because I have not been authentically true to who I am and what I can do. I am not a conventional biographer. I am not a thoroughgoing, date-of-birth to last day of life kind of biographer. My brain doesn't think that way. There's a great Emily Dickinson line starting a poem that says, "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant." And that's what seems to power my imagination.

Hemingway bought the boat in 1934, as his marriage is dissolving, and as he's getting his first spate of bad reviews. This was a major period of transition in his life.

Absolutely. You could say that at the moment he gets this boat he is still the reigning monarch of American literature, but he's already been sniped at by the critics. He's still the king; he controls the crown. But he understood that he was beginning to have trouble. One theory about Hemingway is that he turned to a lot of journalism in the '30s because the fictional well was starting to go dry. The first book that comes up after acquiring Pilar is this quasi-documentary, novelist, journalistic report "Green Hills of Africa," which in its own day suffered bad reviews. Why did he write that book rather than a pure novel about Africa? I think in some sense he began to understand that he was losing some fictional power. And yet he roars back in 1940 with "For Whom the Bell Tolls," the novel about the Spanish Civil War that, ironically and retrospectively, in the long view of history, I think is a weak novel -- even though it was his largest-selling novel.

Many Hemingway detractors like to say that it was all downhill from the '30s onward. I don't see it that way at all. I think it's a sine curve, like most of our lives.

He really did live a life onboard his boat. In addition to landing 500-pound marlins, he got into a dispute with the poet Archibald MacLeish that was the beginning of the end of their friendship; he wrote parts of "Green Hills" onboard; he accidentally shot himself in the legs.

While we're talking, I just flipped open a journal. Here's a note I wrote to myself when I was writing the previous book, "Sons of Mississippi." The Hemingway book was festering, and here's the note I wrote: "Hemingway's boat. June 18, '02. If you study what happened just on that boat you'll get Hemingway's whole life."

About a third of the way through the book you write, "For the last several books and years, Ernest Hemingway's world-famous prose style has been discernibly if subtly altering." And you add, "I believe Pilar was a key part of the change, allowing him to go farther out, where you don't see the shoreline." What do you mean by that?

It's both, in my mind, a literal and metaphorical idea. It is clear that by the mid-'30s the famous prose style of these seemingly simple-minded, declarative sentences without any subordinate clauses had begun to go by the wayside. Not entirely, but he was experimenting with other things -- the sentence line was growing much, much fuller, and there were often many subordinate clauses. Why is this so? What explains it? I don't know that anybody can quite explain it. Some people have thought it had to do, as I say in the book, with getting out of those tight, damp enclosures of Europe and, indeed, atavistically what he came from in the winters of Oak Park, Ill., and crawling out where you can be ever the bohemian, in your beard and your sandals and your raggedy beltless shorts in Key West. Does this have something to do with the expansiveness in his own writing? That's an interesting theory that no one can ever prove. But what you do notice is the evolving change. I like to think that the acquiring of this boat and the ability of Pilar to release him from shore was doing something to him. He was no longer shore bound. It was a seagoing vessel, and you could go far enough out where you would lose sight of land. And I wonder metaphorically whether that, in its sense of adventure, in its sense of release, in its sense of freedom, didn't help expand the sentence line.

I also found it interesting when you write, "Hemingway, a man in a solitary profession, could barely stand to be alone, no matter how much he'd curse at the world for not leaving him alone." In that way, Pilar was his own world, wasn't it? He could control who was onboard, and who wasn't.

I think what you're saying is spot-on. You're in that beautiful environment, but when you're in this contained little capsule you can control it, largely, because you are the captain of it. You also like being challenged, I think, by the elements, these storms that will come up that you cannot control. I think this was also part of the constant adventure that Hemingway needed to seek, needed to challenge himself against. You can control that capsule, and yet the double-edged sword: He hated being alone. His letters to the women he's wooing, who will become his wives and then they'll become failed marriages. Constantly the refrain is: I can't stand to be alone, I'm so lonely. I need you. He needs people around him, and at the same time he is so angry that people are around him and taking his writing time away. So he's shooting himself in the legs once again.

Who is Walter Houk? How did you find him and what did he do for the book?

He's 86. He's reading the book in its entirety now. He is one of two or three veritable, authentic living Hemingway witnesses. If I'm not a conventional biographer, I have to be true to what I can do. The journalistic nose in me instantly said, "Holy shit. You mean there's somebody alive who knew Hemingway. My God." I was trembling. For me to have been able to go and spend all this time with Walter Houk, who turns out to be a great old guy, not a self-aggrandizer. But a very, very astute man, who, yes, is slipping into Alzheimer's but whose long-term memory is so brilliant and beautiful. His life suggested itself to me, "Whoa, Paul, you could make this guy a character in his own right in the story and tell a part of Hemingway through him."

What did Hemingway do with the boat in 1942, during the war?

It's a part that I expect to be criticized by certain critics who wish to say, "Gee, he turns Pilar into a Q-boat, a sub-hunting boat, patrolling off the north coast of Cuba. Why didn't you do more with this?" The short answer is because my imagination took me elsewhere. And also because it has been written by others to some extent. He armed Pilar as a sub-hunting boat, and no matter how much the exercise got polluted with too much ego and too much booze and too many hangers-on, I believe that at base Hemingway had great motivations -- and really did want to encounter a sub and would have been willing to blow up Pilar and himself in the cause of taking down one sub.

The boat today is in Cuba?

The prologue begins in May 2005, when I'm looking at Pilar as if it's dying of thirst and wanting only to get into water. In the process of doing this book, the boat became restored, and I was going to close the book by going back to Cuba and seeing Pilar in her shiny, well-refurbished state. But I did not go there, because I've had to contend with a significant health issue in the last year-and-a-half, during the finishing of the book. The doctors did not want me to go back to Cuba, because you don't want to land in a Cuban hospital. I wrote a different kind of epilogue and then wrote the coda.

And in the process you dispelled, at least in your own mind, the rumors that the Pilar on view in Cuba is an impostor, not Hemingway's actual boat.

Yes, this is probably the authentic boat. But you know, I don't care, ultimately, because that's somebody else's project to see if this is the absolute authentic boat. Pilar is my metaphor, my storytelling vehicle, and there's a secret sly part of me that's happy if we can't know. Because that only adds to the notion of: Can we ever really fucking know Ernest Hemingway?

Schizophrenia 'link' to epilepsy

People with schizophrenia are six times more likely to develop epilepsy, says a study which finds a strong relationship between the two diseases.

Writing in Epilepsia, researchers in Taiwan say this could be due to genetic, neurobiological or environmental factors.

The study followed around 16,000 patients with epilepsy and schizophrenia between 1999 and 2008.

An epilepsy expert says it is an interesting and convincing study.

The study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database and was led by researchers from the China Medical University Hospital in Taichung.

They identified 5,195 patients with schizophrenia and 11,527 patients with epilepsy who were diagnosed during the nine years period.

These groups of patients were compared to groups of the same sex and age who did not have either epilepsy or schizophrenia.

The findings show that the incidence of epilepsy was 6.99 per 1,000 person-years in the schizophrenia patient group compared to 1.19 in the non-schizophrenia group.

This is the first convincing study to suggest that people with schizophrenia could also be at risk of developing epilepsy ?

End Quote Dr Manny Bagary

The incidence of schizophrenia was 3.53 per 1,000 person-years for patients with epilepsy compared to 0.46 in the non-epilepsy group.

Previous studies had suggested a prevalence of psychosis among epilepsy patients.

Two-way relationship

Researchers in this study also found that schizophrenia levels were slightly higher in men with epilepsy than in women with the disease.

Dr I-Ching Chou, associate professor with the China Medical University in Taichung inTaiwan, said:

"Our research results show a strong bidirectional relation between schizophrenia and epilepsy.

"This relationship may be due to common pathogenesis in these diseases such as genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, but further investigation of the pathological mechanisms are needed."

Dr Manny Bagary, consultant neuropsychiatrist in Birmingham, said it was a "very interesting" study.

"We have been aware that epilepsy sufferers seem to be have an increased risk of psychosis but this is the first convincing study to suggest that people with schizophrenia could also be at risk of developing epilepsy, suggesting a bidirectional relationship has been found between depression and epilepsy".

"The association may be due to a common environmental factors such as traumatic brain injury or brain haemorrhage in utero. Alternatively, a genetic association may be relevant such as LGI1 or CNTNAP2 genes which have been associated with seizures and psychosis."

"However, there may be some questions to ask about the reliability of the schizophrenia and epilepsy diagnoses in the study because it is a retrospective health register study and both conditions can be difficult to diagnose.

"Nevertheless, this study will serve to guide further research into the relationship between epilepsy and psychosis."
