Will Miesha Tate be Ronda Rousey?s first UFC opponent?

Lost in the hubbub over Ronda Rousey's admittance to the UFC last night was the fact that she's not the only woman who will be in the UFC. Unless Rousey will be fighting air or a man, she will need a female opponent.

Miesha Tate, the only fighter to last more than a minute with Rousey, said on Twitter that she will be a part of the UFC.

Since losing by arm bar to Rousey, Tate rehabbed the arm injury she sustained in the loss. She then beat Julie Kedzie with an armbar of her own. If this were a perfect world, she would win another fight to earn a shot against Rousey. But this world is not perfect, and as the Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen title bout reminded us, the UFC wants to make dollars, not sense.

For that reason, expect Tate to be Rousey's first opponent. Their fight in March generated a boatload of buzz as the two women continually called each other out. The card they headlined averaged 431,000 viewers and peaked at 560,000 for their bout. Considering this was on a premium network that costs viewers extra to view, it bodes well for their future as a pay-per-view draw.

There are other candidates to fight Rousey. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos was the most dominant woman in MMA until she was suspended for using a banned substance. Her suspension will end in mid-December, but she has had trouble getting down to 145 lbs., much less the 135-lb. weight to challenge for Rousey's bantamweight belt. Like Rousey, Sara McMann has an undefeated record and Olympic credentials, having won a silver medal in wrestling in 2004. But she is not well-known, and the UFC will want to make a splash with their first women's bout.

Who do you think should Rousey should face first? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Head-to-head: The Pacific division foes met twice last February in Kelowna, and in spite of the Heat having a decent home record, they were not able to defeat the eventual Pacific division champs, dropping both games 76-49 and 68-39.

Looking ahead: After this weekend?s battle on the road with the Vikes the Heat will have their home opener when they host a pair of games against the Mount Royal Cougars. UBC Okanagan will host Mount Royal for games on both Fri and Sat Nov. 9-10 in the gym at UBC?s Okanagan campus.

This weekend?s foe: The Vikes have a dynamic backcourt with fifth-year guard Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.), and first-year Kyle Peterson of Edmonton, Alta., has earned starting minutes in several of the pre-season games as point guard along with returning Vike Brandon Dunlop (Victoria, BC) and Vijay Dhillon (Richmond, BC).

In the paint the Vikes will look to six-foot-ten Chris McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) and six-foot-seven Pierce Anderson (Calgary, AB) to provide some gritty rebounding and to be regular contributors on the scoreboard.

Second year Reiner Theil (West Vancouver, B.C.) and fourth year forward Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) will be looked upon to providing scoring punch.

Meet the staff: Pete Guarasci will begin his CIS coaching career for UBC Okanagan this weekend in Victoria, and he will be joined by Kelly Broderick and Matt Heyworth as assistants, who both return for a second season. Alum Alex Roth, will be on the sidelines as an assistant coach as well.

Returning backcourt: Bret Macdonald and Yassine Ghomari return for 2012-13. Macdonald was a freshman last season and logged over 30 minutes a game, averaging just under double-digits in points (8.8 ppg). Ghomari averaged 17.2 ppg, is the team?s perimeter defender, and has the ability to score a number of ways, including slashing to the rim and drawing a foul, or shooting the ball from distance.

Welcome back: To help with the scoring load a Kelowna native and former member of UBC Okanagan, Azi Fahandeg-Sadi, has transferred back from UFV. In his one year for the Cascades in a part-time role Fahandeg-Sadi (formerly Ryan Fahandeg) averaged 8.8ppg and shot 43.8% from beyond the arc.

Rookies: Kelowna Secondary phenom Mitch Goodwin, one of the top high school recruits, has stayed in Canada and is a great athlete with an extra gear and good court vision. Greet Gill has quickly adapted to the speed of the game and has shown an advanced ability to rebound as well as hit open jumpers.

New to the school but not to the game: Guards Anwar Faza and Landry Ndayitwayeko have joined the Heat from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Ndayitwayeko played last season at Lakeland College where he averaged 10.95 ppg, and 5.0 rpg for one of the top ranked college teams in the nation. Guarasci coached Anwar at Grant MacEwan and the 6-4 guard averaged 12.92 ppg and 7.23 rpg.

Bigs?: Ed Dane Medi and his high energy game will be back. At 6-4 and a very quick jumper off the floor he will rarely get out-rebounded. To assist Medi in the post will be emerging forward 6-8 Julian Asselstine, a second year player still learning the game defensively but who has a soft touch on his shot. Also in the mix is a holdover for the Heat?s days in the college league in 6-5 Dave Mackay (4th year, Vancouver, BC).

VICTORIA, BC ? The Victoria Vikes graduated three starters from the veteran team was 14-4 last season and are led by head coach Craig Beaucamp, who returns for his 10th season at UVic.

The Vikes will need to recover their loss in big shooters from the perimeter by leaning on fifth-year guard Michael Acheampong and fourth-year forward Terrell Evans. The two seniors will need to be the consistent double-digit scorers for the Vikes, who boast six players in their first or second year.

First-year Kyle Peterson, of Edmonton, Alta., has already shown to be the most promising of the freshmen class, as he has earned starting minutes in several of the pre-season games as point guard. Peterson, along with returning Vike Brandon Dunlop, will be a key distributer for the UVic side.

Dunlop, who previously played two seasons for the Vikes in 2007-08 and 2008-09, returns to the Vikes after taking three years off from playing basketball.? Dunlop played valuable minutes with the likes of CIS stars and former Vikes Tyler Hass and Mitch Gudgeon and is now back on the floor to compete for his third season.

Beaucamp will look to six-foot-ten Chris McLaughlin and 6-7 Pierce Anderson in the center role to provide some gritty rebounding in the paint and to be regular contributors on the scoreboard.

Guard John Woldu is out with an injury that occurred during the summer.

In the preseason, the Vikes went 3-3 against CIS competition including the Carleton Ravens, Lakehead University and UBC Okanagan. Recently, the Vikes defeated defending Canada West champion Alberta at the Guy Vetrie Memorial tournament in Victoria.

Sydney Conservative: Mother and child reunion

The wisdom of Solomon failed when the mother wanted the baby divided in half. It is unthinkable that that should happen, but some, acting under depression will do the unthinkable.

I've been asked by family to reconcile with my mother. But I don't feel that path is wise. Not because she has hurt me, although she has. Not because she is now harmless and old, because she isn't harmless. My mother may well be a source of my troubles right now and a threat to my future. Not knowing what to do, I seek wisdom.

Part of the advice given me is to forget the past and embrace the future. I've only got the one mother. However the threat feels real and present. So I will divide it into three categories. Past, present and future.

The future. I am in love and wish to have family. I have visions of my mother harming my wife and children. I hear her excuse being that it is because I wouldn't reconcile with her. And yet I feel the danger is from my trying.

Forgiveness is the path, and I am at peace having done that. But I cannot help her, and despite the urgency in which those who don't know, but are family, suggest reconciliation, I have prayed on the matter and do not feel that is what God wants for me to do. And I know I could be wrong.

Carob-Almond Wafers & What I Ate Yesterday - Carrie On Vegan

Happy Halloween and happy last day of Vegan Mofo 2012! I ended up with a total of 13 entries which, unfortunately, did not beat my record from last year, but I had a pretty good excuse this year. I liked the theme I chose of Cancer-Fighting Foods, you can see a list of all my posts by clicking here. Next year?s goal will be to post at least 15 times and to pick another cool theme and maybe stick with it a little better. I think it?s such a cool concept to bring together the vegan community and I?m so proud to be a part of it.

Today is What I Ate Wednesdays where I post a photo journal of everything I ate yesterday. I started off with a green smoothie using a blend of collard greens and spinach as the veggie component (this is my favorite recipe, I just substituted the watercress for the collards and spinach). As you can see, I maximize my Vitamix capacity and I usually end up with leftovers for the next day. In other words, between Alan and me, this much makes 4 good-sized smoothies:

I have found myself reducing my portion size just a little bit since I lost a little bit of weight before my surgery and my stomach size is appropriately smaller. I find this amount is enough to fuel my morning workout but not too much that I?m not hungry for lunch:

Even as we start to get cooler mornings here in California, I love a cold, refreshing smoothie for breakfast. I usually just put on an extra jacket after I drink it until I warm back up. :)

Lunch yesterday was a big salad with romaine, tempeh, chickpeas, jicama, onion, quinoa, tomatoes, pine nuts and some of Dr. Fuhrman?s Almond Balsamic Dressing:

For dessert, I had an Asian pear and about 3 tablespoons of almond butter:

I had a community lecture to attend last night after dinner, so I made something very simple which was just steamed kale topped with water-sauted mushrooms, onions, garlic and black beans. First, I steamed the kale:

Then, in a separate pan, I just heated up a teensy bit of water and added the onions and mushrooms:

During the last few minutes, I added the garlic, black beans and just a touch of tamari for flavor. I sprinkled some sesame seeds on top so it would look pretty:

How amazingly simple is that?!? I need to make more meals like this, it came together in 15 minutes.

For dessert, I had something special that was fresh out of the dehydrator. This is the type of healthy dessert that I was referring to in my discussion of sugar addiction in Wednesday?s post. It?s inspired by a recipe I found in the Vegan for the Holidays cookbook that I?m giving away on my blog this Friday (you can enter here). Zel?s recipe is called Choco-Wafers and uses walnuts, dates, raisins and cocoa powder. I wanted to make my own version using almonds and carob so that?s what I did.

I used the food processor to mix together almonds, dates, currants, water and carob:

I used these dates, by the way, they are already pitted for lazy?busy people:

I then spread the mixture thinly on a piece of parchment paper set in a small baking sheet:

I put the batter on the paper onto a dehydrator tray and scored the batter into wafers:

I dehydrated these at 115 degrees for 10 hours and then flipped them, taking them off the paper, and dehydrated them for another 10 hours on the other side:

They ended up being crunchy, sweet and very waferish!

Here?s the recipe:

Carob-Almond Wafers?adapted from Zel Allen?s Choco-Wafers published in?Vegan for the Holidays

Makes 4 servings or about 12 wafers

Ingredients:

1 cup almonds

1 cup dates, pitted (you can use Medjool or Deglet Noor)

1/4 cup dried currants

1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon water

1 tablespoon carob

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a food processor and process until combined but still slightly chunky. Spread batter onto a small parchment-lined baking sheet and use the back of a spoon to ensure that batter is spread as thinly as possible in order to have a wafer-like consistency.

Place batter on parchment paper onto a dehydrator tray and dry at 115 degrees for 10-12 hours. Flip the wafers, removing the parchment paper, and dry for another 10-12 hours or until wafers are crisp.

Alternatively, you can bake these wafers in the oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes.

I ended up eating about 5 wafers for dessert last night:

Ideally, I think these wafers served with some fruit would be a great dessert, maybe even something I?ll consider for the holidays this year. The wafers are not overly sweet, but they definitely are an indulgence, albeit a healthy one.

Before I end this post for today, I had a few people ask me questions about my history of sugar addiction and so I just wanted to say that it?s been a lifelong struggle for me. In fact, one of my earliest memories goes back to when I was probably 5 years old and I raided the pantry for some candy that I knew my parents had hidden from me. Of course, I got caught and then I lied about it and got in even more trouble which probably was the start of the good food/bad food scenario for me that I?ve also struggled with my whole life.

But, as far as the real sugar addiction, I can?t say when all that started except that there must be something in my brain that gravitates toward sugar and then has a problem controlling the urge to have more. If there is any truth to people having addictive tendencies, then I am for sure one of those people. This topic is not something I?ve studied in depth or have any professional experience with whatsoever, it?s just kind of my gut feeling for what is going on.

That?s enough armchair psychology for a Wednesday morning for me? have a great day and I?ll see you back here on Friday with some exciting news from the world of healthy vegan food!
