Famous snorers and 5 types of snorers | spider article

Many famous people both living and not, have been widely remembered for anything but their snoring. Yet for those living with them or around them, memories of their snoring would have equaled their celebrity status.

Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill, Queen Victoria, Teddy Roosevelt are just a few historical figures known to be great snorers, and who all shared the same characteristics of being short, overweight and having a short neck. Celebrity snorers amongst us today are said to include Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Douglas and even Tom Cruise (or so one magazine quoted as being the reason why he and Katie Holmes had separate bedrooms).

Teddy Roosevelt was remembered by fellow patients when he was staying in a hospital, as having snored to such deafening proportions that complaints were made to the staff that patients could not rest and sleep.

Winston Churchill was well known for his love of cigars and enjoying more than his fair share of alcohol, and was also badly overweight. Again all known contributors to snoring.

So if you are one of America?s 90 million snorers, you are in good company.

As part of a 2007 study, the UK Travelodge Hotel chain classified their snorers into groups, based on the sound they made when they snored. The top five ?snorer types? identified were:

1. The Snorter (18%) ? distinguished by a rapid blowing of air through the nostrils and mouth, similar to the sound of a horse snorting
2. The Snorchestra (12%) typified by long, low snores that gradually build into a deafening crescendo
3. The McEnroe (10%) ? distinguished by violent grunting sounds, similar to the noise made by tennis stars when competing
4. The Walrus (8%) ? typified by continuous groaning noises when sleeping
5. The Old Banger (5%) ? sounds like a broken car with a spluttering engine

So what ?type? of snorer would you class yourself as, or each of our famous snorers?

It is important that people take responsibility for their own health and the health of people they love and care about. So if snoring is damaging their health and their relationships with those around them, they need to do something about it.

Here are some suggestions to start looking at:

  1. Review your lifestyle, as this is the easiest to change without medical intervention. Are you overweight or drinking too much alcohol, are you drinking alcohol or eating heavy meals too near to bedtime, are you stressed or maybe not getting enough exercise? The benefit of addressing these factors is not only will the snoring be reduced but you will also feel much better overall. (as will the people around you).
  2. Look for things that may be contributing to your snoring such as suffering allergies, taking certain medications, sleeping on your back, ongoing nasal congestion from colds.
  3. There are literally hundreds of readily available stop snoring remedies available, either from your local stores or on-line. Remember to try out lots, and don?t give up after the first couple, as it may take you a while to find the solution that best suits you and your partner.
  4. If none of this works, there are also medical options, some of which are not too invasive such as injection snoreplasty and the pillar procedure. These involve the stiffening of the soft mouth palate which stops the vibration of it that causes the snoring noise, and both procedures are done in medical consulting rooms under local anaesthetic, taking around 30minutes.
