I have invested INR 1,00,000 in DSP ML world Gold Fund, at NAV of Rs.14 on end Oct?07, after investing this fund the NAV has been moving to underneath. But it was performed well in earlier days. It was gave 40% returns with in 3 months period. What should I do for in this case, shall I hold and switch to another fund. Please suggest us.

It's hoped that, in the future, robots might be used to guide endangered fish populations away from oil spills and other calamities, in much the same way as battery-powered leaders have guided humanity since the dawn of time (allegedly).

Despite their best efforts, it's possible to figure out who the real owner of a mansion or penthouse is with a little sleuthing.

Such is the case with a posh Manhattan penthouse for sale. In 2008, it was reported that former news anchor and Oprah Winfrey's best bud Gayle King bought a 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath apartment in the new Midtown tower Place 57.

After all was said and done, it appeared that the home was not purchased by King, but by the talk show diva herself for $7.1 million.

Who actually lived there is up for debate, but as for now, the penthouse is for sale for $7.9 million and appears to be vacant.

Finished in 2006, Place 57 has condos from $1.47 million to $7-plus million. Oprah's penthouse sits on the 36th floor and features 2,530 square feet of wall-to-ceiling windowed space as well as a 768-square-foot terrace.

The modern space features a "triangle-shaped" living room, high-end kitchen, dining area, and two bedrooms, one with an attached bathroom. The master suite has three walk-in closets, a jetted tub and sleek shower.

Patricia Arquette and former husband Thomas Jane listed their home for sale in Mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles after they announced their divorce. First listed on the market in June 2011, Arquette's home recently sold for $2.775 million ? 20 percent less than the original asking price, according to the Real Estalker.

Arquette, best known for her role in TV's "Medium," which aired 2005 through 2011, purchased the vine-covered home in 2003 with Jane for $2.25 million. Arquette and Jane ? of TV series "Hung" ? were married in 2006, they divorced in late 2010.

Built in 1929, Arquette's former home is a stucco "Rennaisance Revival" home covered in vines and filled with 1920s details. Girl shot: 9-year-old in jail jumpsuit cries in court

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. ? Crying and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, a slight, 9-year-old boy stood before a judge who would determine whether he would face criminal charges in a school shooting that left another third-grader critically wounded.

The week before, court records say, the boy had told classmates that he planned to run away from his uncle?s house, where he has lived since his grandmother died a year ago. He told them he would bring his dad?s gun with him for protection. Instead, he found a gun at his mother?s house, where he had visited over the weekend, records say.

On Wednesday, the boy stowed the .45-caliber Heckler and Koch pistol at the bottom of his backpack. The safety was off and the gun was cocked.

Around 1:29 p.m., one minute before school let out, the boy plopped his backpack on a desk in his third-grade classroom in Bremerton, Wash, a quiet community that is an hour from Seattle by ferry.

The gun went off, making a loud boom, and Amina Kocer-Bowman, age 8, crumbled to the floor, bleeding from a hole in her stomach.

Amina?s teacher administered first aid before a flight across Puget Sound to Harborview Medical Center.

An officer found that the bottom of the boy?s backpack had been blown open where the pistol?s muzzle had been pointed. The gun had another live round in the chamber and a spent .45 casing was still in the pack.

Preliminary hearing
During the hearing on Thursday, the boy sat next to his father, who rubbed his son?s back. After, as officers led the boy away, his father, Jason Cochran, had tears in his eyes as he hugged his son.

"I just want everyone to know that my kid made a mistake. It was a terrible mistake," his father, Jason Cochran, said outside the courthouse, according to The Associated Press.

The boy is being investigated on these charges: Third-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree and possession of a firearm on school facilities. Bail was set at $50,000 bail. The boy would be released to his uncle and legal guardian, Patrick Cochran, if it is met.

"He's a good kid. It's all I can say," Patrick Cochran told the AP. "I apologize to the family of that girl. I really do."

Amina remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after undergoing surgery. Her doctor said she would likely stay at the hospital for several weeks and go through more surgeries.

Todd Dowell of the Kitsap County prosecutor's juvenile division told msnbc.com that several of the boy's family members?had attended the hearing.

Dowell said that under state law children between 8 and 12 years old can face charges if a court determines the child has the capacity to understand an act is wrong. A capacity hearing in this case is scheduled for March 7.

Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher would not discuss whether authorities were investigating any adults in connection with the shooting or release further information about the investigation.

Authorities say the shooting was accidental.

Kids and guns
Twenty-seven states have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns, but Washington is not one of those states, according to the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence.

Gail Hammer, a law professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, said it is very rare for a child as young as 9 to be charged with a crime. Even if a young child is convicted, they wouldn't be sent to an adult prison, Hammer said.

"Generally with young children they try to deal with it in the juvenile system," she said.

In 2000, 6-year-old Kayla Rolland, a Michigan first-grader, was fatally shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a gun from home. Last year, a 6-year-old kindergartner at a Houston elementary school accidentally fired a gun as he was showing it off to friends, injuring three students.

Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser said the school where Wednesday's shooting happened, with about 400 students, was open for classes Thursday with 10 counselors available to talk with teachers, students and parents.

Glaser said the classroom where the shooting took place remained closed and that the students from that classroom have been moved.

EU's 'frontier funder' turns five

British-based scientists have received almost a billion euros in funding from the European Research Council (ERC) since it was set up five years ago.

The UK has been by far the most successful EU nation in winning grants from the agency that prioritises frontier, or "blue skies", study.

Many were sceptical of the ERC's mission when it was first proposed in the early 2000s.

But its budget will nearly double in Europe's next funding round.

"The fact that you can express it in so few words is a very powerful statement by the European Commission," said Prof Donald Dingwell, the ERC's secretary-general.

"They're telling the world they want to double what they call blue skies research - what I call 'the best research'.

"That is the most astonishing testimony from a political system when you look at all the other headlines coming out about the future of Europe and its financial state," he told BBC News.

Billion-euro boon

The ERC was launched in Berlin by German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 27 February, 2007.

It was told simply to target the best ideas, and to actively take some risks - to back research where the outcomes might be far from certain.

And it stipulated that grants awarded should go to the scientists themselves, not to the institutions where they worked.

The initial budget to cover the period 2007-2013 was 7.5bn euros (?6.4bn). The next instalment, to run from 2014 to 2020, is proposed to be 13.2bn euros (?11.1bn).

In setting up the ERC, the Commission (the executive arm of the 27-nation EU) hoped also to drive competition across the science base.

Grants are not given out on the basis of any sort of geographical quota or on nationality. Indeed, the grantee does not even have to be European. All they have to establish is the excellence of their endeavour and that at least 50% of their time will be spent in one of the EU or its associated countries.

The possibility exists, therefore, for nations and institutions to go and head-hunt the best scientists in the world, promising them a lab and back-up facilities if they can first win an ERC grant.

"Universities are certainly recognising that the ERC is a way they can compete with each other," said Prof Dingwell.

"They have to in the sense that these grants belong to the people and not to the universities - and people do move. Unless those universities provide the best conditions, the scientist will walk, either at the end of the grant or even during it."

The system has clearly benefited the UK. A fifth of all the grants (by year end 2011) have come to British-based researchers - 550 of them, valued at over 922 million euros (?782m).

Scientists working at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL have done particularly well out of the ERC, perhaps not surprisingly given their known strengths.

When the ERC was set up, the journal Science dubbed it the "Champions' League" for grants, and in the case of the UK, this football analogy is very apt. Some 44% of all the awardees are not British - just like the army of overseas footballers who now ply their trade in the English topflight.

Dr Nicole Boivin is a classic example. She is a Canadian archaeologist, drawn to Britain by the excellence of some of its institutions and facilities, and its intellectual climate.

She is investigating the initial steps to globalisation, with particular reference to the Indian Ocean where some of the first major cross-cultural interactions took place thousands of years ago. Her project employs some innovative approaches, pulling together expertise from a range of disciplines - not just standard archaeology, but fields such as historical linguistics, molecular biology and palaeo-environmental studies.

"The ERC is amazing because they really advocate multidisciplinarity," she told BBC News.

"In the UK, there's a lot of talk about how we should be more multidisciplinary, but the Research Councils tend to reflect specific research areas and if you come up with a project that bridges those different areas, it can be quite hard to get funding."

It is an old adage that high standards are required to get to the top, only matched by the standards required to stay there. And Dr Boivin has a competitive warning for the UK where national science funding is going through a period of stagnation after a decade of growth.

"Cambridge and Oxford are no longer at the top of the international university league tables; they're starting to slip down a bit," she said.

"I think it's something Britain should be really alarmed about. It's what Britain has always excelled at - education and research.

"They should be doing a lot more to stay at the top, to continue to attract big-name researchers and to do high-level research, but that takes money and that money has to be invested."

Lookout launches Ad Network Detector, a new tool to manage privacy

The folks over at Lookout Labs have released a new Android app today, and it's one that I think a whole lot of folks are going to love. Dubbed Ad Network Detector, it's an app that detects which advertisement networks are running in the other apps you've downloaded and installed, tells you what apps are using them, and lets you know a bit about what type of information they can be tracking about you.

Lets get to the meat of the issue -- ads are not bad or evil. I've been known to wear a tinfoil hat on occasion, but even I recognize that advertisements are a great way for developers to offer apps for free, and make them accessible to everyone -- not just those with a credit card, who are willing to pay (or able to pay in their country) for them from the Market. Developers deserve to make money, I get it. But we also deserve to know what info these ad networks are collecting. Let's be honest, most folks don't bother to read the permissions screen when they install an app. None of these ad networks are going to do anything illegal or inherently evil, so there's no harm in knowing more about them, right? Here's an easy way to know all of that.

Just install the app, run it and let it scan the applications you've installed on your phone. You get a handy list of things ad networks can do (including the horrible trick of putting ads in your notification bar), and how many of each you might have installed. A quick tap opens the tree, and you see the names of the culprits ad networks that are using each type of ad. Another tap and you get more information about how it all works and the apps that are using this type of placement or collection. From there, you can decide what to do. I love it when power is put back in the hands of the user, and knowing is the most important part. This is one I'll recommend to everyone with an Android phone.
