Former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz has won the runoff for Republican nomination for United States Senate handily. He defeated his rival, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who pledged his support of Cruz in the fall election.
Cruz wins by nearly 14 points
According to the Texas Secretary of State, Cruz won 628,336 votes or 56.80 percent of the total as compared to Dewhurst's 477,888 or 43.19 percent of the vote. According to the Daily Caller, the Associated Press called the election for Cruz an hour and 25 minutes after the polls closed in most of Texas at 7 PM Central time.
Dewhurst money advantage was not enough
The Daily Caller also notes that Dewhurst spent a total of close to $19 million by July 25. Dewhurst had loaned his own campaign just over $19 million of his personal fortune. By contrast, Cruz spent about $7 million.
Cruz win a triumph for the Tea Party and Sarah Palin
The Daily Caller also mentions that Cruz was a tea party favorite as opposed to Dewhurst who was considered a more establishment Republican. The NBC News affiliate in Dallas mentions that while Dewhurst was endorsed by a bevy of Republican office holders such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Cruz was endorsed by such notables as Sarah Palin. Palin had visited Texas four days before the election to personally stump for him. With a number of wins by her endorsed candidates, such as Richard Mourdock of Indiana, Cruz's victory demonstrates once again why Palin is considered the most powerful female politician on the planet.
Dewhurst and Hutchison pledge their support
The Dallas NBC affiliate also notes that the current United States Senator from Texas, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Dewhurst has pledged their full support for Cruz's campaign to be elected senator in the Fall. This is despite the fact that the campaign was often bitter, with negative advertising and personal attacks.
Cruz served Chick-fil-A at his victory party
Following the lead of Palin, who publicly stopped at a Chick-fil-A on her way to the airport from her Texas rally, Cruz served Chick-fil-A catered food at his victory party, according to Legal Insurrection. The opposition of Chick-fil-A's CEO to same sex marriage has enraged gays and advocates of same sex marriage, which in turn has galvanized social conservatives. Cruz is artfully positioning himself in the latter camp, working upon the theory that there are more religious people from who same sex marriage is an anathema in Texas than there are advocates of the same.
