MINNEAPOLIS -- Jennifer Jacobs has been named as an assistant director for compliance for the Augsburg College athletic department and as an assistant coach for the Auggies? volleyball program, the college has announced.
Jacobs is serving in a two-year NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women?s Internship Grant position, which was awarded to the college this spring.
A 2004 graduate of Minnesota State University Mankato, Jacobs spent the last three seasons as assistant coach at Richfield (Minn.) High School, in addition to serving as the Richfield School District?s liaison for African-American Outreach.
"Augsburg is very fortunate to hire Jen as our assistant compliance director/assistant volleyball coach. She will be a great fit based upon her previous experiences and her career goals,? said Augsburg Assistant Athletic Director Kelly Anderson Diercks. "We expect Jen will make significant contributions, not only to the compliance office and the volleyball program, but also to the athletic department as a whole. Over the next two years, we think she'll do an outstanding job for our athletic department."
Prior to coming to Richfield, Jacobs served as head coach at St. Paul Harding High School from 2005-08, and was an assistant coach at her collegiate alma mater in the 2004 season. She has also served as a club coach for the Northern Lights Volleyball Club since 2005.
Jacobs played at MSU Mankato from 2000-03, earning American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II All-America third-team honors and AVCA All-Region honors in 2002.? She was an All-North Central Conference selection in 2002 and 2003, while earning honorable-mention all-conference honors in 2000 and 2001. Maverick teams she played for went 73-50 in her four seasons (44-16 her final two years), including trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament each of her final three seasons.
Jacobs was the first Maverick player in school history to record both 1,000 kills and digs in a career, with her 1,555 kills and 1,623 digs still standing as school records. She also holds the school?s single-match record for kills (30). During her high school days at St. Paul Central, she was a three-time all-conference recipient and earned Star-Tribune All-Metro second-team honors in 1999.
While coaching in the Northern Lights club program, Jacobs? teams have won two AAU national championships. Her teams have also finished third and second at U.S. Junior Olympic national tournaments, along with winning the U.S. Junior Olympic national title in the age 17 Open division this past season. Several of her Northern Lights players have gone on to play for elite collegiate programs at the Division I and Division II levels.
"I'm super excited to join the Augsburg athletic department and the women's volleyball program,? Jacobs said. ?Augsburg has a strong tradition of developing good students, dedicated athletes and world-class people. I intend to help raise the bar for excellence for our student athletes and contribute to an already amazing, high-functioning athletic department. On the court, (Augsburg coach Jane) Becker has lifted the women?s volleyball program to compete at the level they are completely capable of, and I am anxious to get on the court and help train the team. Off the court, I have always had a strong lean towards administration, and this opportunity under Kelly Anderson Diercks and (Augsburg Athletic Director) Jeff Swenson will be an amazing learning experience for me."
Jacobs earned her bachelor?s degree in psychology from MSU Mankato in 2004, and earned her master?s degree in educational administration from St. Mary?s University in 2009. She is currently pursuing her Minnesota K-12 Principal License through St. Mary?s.
Under Becker, Augsburg finished 16-12 overall, 7-4 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in 2011, earning a trip to the MIAC postseason playoffs for the second time in a three-season span.
